Germany: According to a new study backed by the German Cement Works Association (VDZ), the country's cement and lime industries require carbon capture and storage (CCS) for decarbonisation. The study outlines the need for a 4800km CO2 transport pipeline in Germany by 2035.
The VDZ warns that any delay could jeopardise Germany's 2045 climate neutrality target and estimates the investment for the new CO2 grid at €14bn. The network is expected to transport 6.5Mt/yr of CO₂ by 2030, increasing to 46Mt by 2045. Additionally, CCS transit from Switzerland, Austria and France is expected to contribute 15 - 20Mt.
VDZ president Christian Knell said "Cement manufacturers and other industries in the EU emissions trading system must produce largely climate-neutrally by 2040."
GAS Arabian Services to supply gas equipment to Yamama Cement
12 February 2024Saudi Arabia: GAS Arabian Services Company has won a contract for the procurement of metering skids, pressure reduction stations and gas pipelines for Yamama Cement, Mist News has reported. Yamama Cement is in the process of expanding its Northern Halal cement plant to 32,500t/day in capacity.
Italy: Utilities provider Snam says that it has begun selecting partners for its upcoming Ravenna carbon capture and storage (CCS) transport network. The network will connect hard-to-abate industrial facilities in Ravenna with 500Mt of CO2 storage space in the Mediterranean Sea. The total cost of infrastructure for the project is Euro350m.
CEO Stefano Venier said "The cement industry will be a central partner in this project. A partnership with Heidelberg will be announced in a few days."
New Gas pipeline built at Najaf cement plant in Iraq
01 January 2024Iraq: A 1200m dry gas pipeline feeding the Najaf cement plant has been commissioned. The project was the first external assignment carried out by the Oil Pipelines Company, according to the National Iraqi News Agency. The plant is operated by the Southern Cement Company.
Heidelberg Materials secures funding for Geseke cement plant GeZero carbon capture project
18 December 2023Germany: The European Union Innovation Fund has awarded Heidelberg Materials Euro191m in funding to support its development of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain at Geseke cement plant in North Rhine-Westphalia. The planned project, called GeZero, involves the construction of an oxyfuel kiln, capture system and train transport infrastructure. Having received the funding, Heidelberg Materials and its partners will commence work in January 2024. They will subsequently scale the capture system to 700,000t/yr and build pipelines to transport CO2. Energy provider Wintershall Dea will receive the CO2 at its upcoming coastal hub for processing and storage below the North Sea.
Heidelberg Materials Germany general manager Christian Knell said “Together with our partners, we walk the talk and pave the way for CCS in Germany. GeZero will complement our global project portfolio with a truly unique approach. We are developing a promising novel solution for inland cement sites, with the intention to inspire industry peers and other emission-intensive sectors to follow.”
Global chief custainability officer Nicola Kimm said “The successful grant agreement demonstrates the relevance of GeZero for the decarbonisation of our sector, and the trust that European authorities place in our approach.”
Government to inspect Sinji-Pirim Cement's Sinji-Pirim cement plant over smoke emissions
18 July 2023Kyrgyzstan: The Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision has requested an inspection of Sinji-Pirim's Sinji-Pirim cement plant in Osh Region's Aravan District. Central Asia News has reported that a video emerged on social media showing smoke rising from pipes at the plant on 6 July 2023.
Sinji-Pirim Cement has operated the Sinji-Pirim cement plant since March 2018.
Germany: The EU Innovation Fund has granted funding to the GeZero carbon capture project at Heidelberg Materials' Geseke cement plant in North Rhine-Westphalia. The project consists of a 700,000t/yr carbon capture system and an oxyfuel kiln upgrade. A captive solar power plant will provide energy for the new systems. CO2 storage partner Wintershall Dea will receive purified liquefied CO2 from the capture system via its Wilhelmshaven distribution hub for storage under the North Sea.
Heidelberg Materials Germany general manager Christian Knell said “This project sets an important milestone for the cement industry and for effective carbon management in Germany. We are now counting on the tailwind of Germany’s future Carbon Management Strategy and the regulatory framework to come.”
CEO Dominik von Achten added “With GeZero, we will once again show how Heidelberg Materials’ pioneering spirit is paving the way for the decarbonisation of our industry. We will be the first to realise a full CCS chain for the capture, transport and permanent storage of all CO₂ emissions from an inland location in Germany. Austria/Germany: Rohrdorfer Group and gas network company Bayernets have published a feasibility study for a proposed CO2 transport network in Bavaria in Upper Austria. The first stage of the CO2peline plan will be to create an ‘island’ network between the Rohrdorfer cement plant in Upper Bavaria and the so-called ‘Bavarian chemical triangle.’ An additional connection to the industrial and chemical region of Linz in Austria would add additional CO₂ sources, places of use and temporary storage sites to the grid. Further expansion plans could see the network expanded to cover the whole of Bavaria. A future connection to a Germany-based national network and international routes could further link the network to other locations where CO2 is both produced and used, as well as creating routes to sequestration sites.
No dates have been released for the proposed CO2 pipeline network. However, the project notes that Germany is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2045 and Bavaria and Austria by 2040.
Expanded Sucre-Potosí gas pipeline comes online
13 June 2023Bolivia: State-owned gas and oil company YPFB has commenced gas supply to Potosí via its Sucre-Potosí gas pipeline, which underwent a 32% capacity expansion to 4.15Mm3/day. Página Siete News has reported that the expansion cost US$5.8m. YPFB said that it can now increase gas allocations in accordance with customers' contracts.
Empresa Publica Productiva Cementos de Bolivia (ECEBOL) is scheduled to commission its upcoming 1.3Mt/yr Potosí cement plant in June 2023. YPFB holds a contract to supply 337,000m3/yr of natural gas to the plant. YPFB says that the expanded Sucre-Potosí pipeline will help to boost cement production in Bolivia, both to supply domestic demand and to establish an export market.
Denmark: Aalborg Portland and US-based Fidelis New Energy have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on the onshore storage of captured CO2 from the cement producer's Aalborg cement plant in North Jutland. The partners will convey captured CO2 from the plant to Fidelis New Energy's upcoming Norne Carbon Storage Hub at East Port of Aalborg via a pipeline. The pipeline is scheduled for commissioning ahead of the launch of the Aalborg cement plant's upcoming carbon capture system in 2030. The system will capture 400,000t/yr of CO2 from the plant's flue gases.
Fidelis New Energy's Norne Carbon Storage Hub is due to commence operations in 2026. It will have a handling capacity of 4Mt/yr of CO2, with the possibility of subsequently expanding to 8Mt/yr.
