India: Shree Cement has appointed Neeraj Akhoury as its designated managing director. Hari Mohan Bangur has also been appointed as chair and Prashant Bangur as Vice Chair. All these personnel changes are subject to approval by the members of the company. In addition, Gopal Bangur has resigned as chair and will become Chairman Emeritus.

Akhoury holds nearly 30 years of professional experience in the cement and steel sectors. He began his career in 1993 at Tata Steel, working for both the cement and steel divisions. He joined Lafarge India in 1999 and worked as member of the Executive Committee responsible for corporate affairs followed by sales. In 2011, he moved to Nigeria as the head of Lafarge AshakaCem. Later, he was appointed as Strategy & Business Development Director for the Middle East & Africa at Lafarge’s headquarters in Paris. He became the head of LafargeHolcim Bangladesh in 2015 and then was appointed as the head of ACC in 2017 and Ambuja Cement in 2020.

Akhoury is a graduate in economics from Allahabad University and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Liverpool. He has also studied one-year General Management Program at XLRI Jamshedpur and is an alumunus of Harvard Business School.

Nigeria: Ashaka Cement, a subsidiary of Lafarge Africa, is set to inaugurate a 16MW power plant project in a bid to improve the reliablilty of its energy supply. Managing Director Rabiu Abdullah Umar said that the company would invest US$30.5m in the project. “We are helping to remove ourselves from the (national) demand for energy and providing our own solution,” he said. “This means a minimum of 16MW of electricity will now become available to the public grid for the people in the region to enjoy.”

Nigeria: Ashaka Cement has spent over US$4m on community projects in Gombe state since 2010. The funding has been invested in social initiatives near its Ashaka cement plant and Maiganga coal mine, according to the Daily Independent newspaper. Its projects include training young people in vocational trades and engineering. It also distributed 5000 safety vests to schoolchildren at a community day.

Nigeria: Ashaka Cement plans to complete its 16MW captive power plant in early 2019. The subsidiary of Lafarge Africa and LafargeHolcim started the US$30.5m project in 2017, according to the Nigerian Guardian newspaper. Once operational the power plant will supply additional electricity to the national grid as well as supplying the neighbouring cement plant.

Nigeria: Mallam Suleiman Yahyah has resigned as chairman from AshakaCem. Yahyah joined the board of directors of the subsidiary of LafargeHolcim in 2010 and became its chairman in 2015.

Nigeria: Seven directors have resigned their appointments from the Board of Ashaka Cement with effect from 10 March 2015. Umaru Kwairanga (chairman), John William Stull (vice chairman), Sen. Muhammed A. Muhammed, Kolawole Babalola Jamodu, Abubakar Ali Gombe, Lamido Abba Tukur and Hamra Imam have all resigned.

The board has appointed Mallam Suleiman Yahyah as the new board chairman with effect from 12 March 2015. They also appointed three as non-executive directors, Anders Kristiansson, Edith Onwuchekwa and Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, with effect from 12 March 2015.
