India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has signed a power purchase agreement with BluPine Energy to establish a 47MW solar power plant in Karnataka. The plant will generate approximately 94 million kWh of electricity annually and reduce over 85,000t/yr of CO₂ emissions.
CEO of BluPine Energy, Neerav Nanavaty, said "The solar plant in Karnataka will not only produce clean energy but also foster local economic growth and support environmental sustainability. This project will help reduce operating costs and improve energy efficiency."
India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Denmark-based FLSmidth to collaborate in the research and development of sustainable solutions for cement manufacturing. The agreement has been arranged under the ‘Green Strategic Partnership’ initiatives between Denmark and India that cover energy and climate change.
Under the MOU both companies will cooperate on a range of areas such as substituting conventional energy supplies with renewable sources and working towards CO2 emissions abatement. Both companies have committed to contributing research and development towards eventually building an industrial scale production plant where the new concepts can be further tested.
Mahendra Singhi, the managing director and chief executive officer of Dalmia Cement (Bharat) said, “In alignment with the ambitious net zero vision of our Prime Minister Narendra Modiji and given the strength and stature of our respective organisations, this association will provide futuristic solutions to the cement and concrete industry to emerge clean and green.” He added that India and Dalmia Cement in particular were keen to develop a roadmap for the implementation of Industry 4.0 with totally decarbonised cement plants and a ‘lighthouse’ cement plant.
Dalmia Cement commences operations at expanded Kapilas cement plant
27 September 2021India: Dalmia Cement has begun cement production at the new 2.3Mt/yr Line 2 of it Kapilas cement plant near Cuttack in Odisha. The plant now commands a production capacity of 4.0Mt/yr.
India: Dalmia Cement has signed three memoranda of understanding with the state government of Jharkhand. The memoranda provide that the Dalmia Bharat subsidiary will invest US$104m in expanding its cement operations in the state. The producer’s plans consist of a US$68.5m upgrade and capacity expansion to its Bokaro cement grinding plant. The project will increase the existing production line’s capacity to 3.7Mt/yr and add a new grinding line, bringing the total plant’s capacity to 6.3Mt/yr. In addition the cement producer will spend US$34m towards building a solar power plant and the remainder will be spent on setting up a waste management facility.
Indian cement producers’ petcoke use fell amid rising fuel prices in fourth quarter of 2021 financial year
01 June 2021India: Cement producers reduced the proportion of coal in their fuel mixes during the fourth quarter of the local 2021 financial year. Ramco Cements’ petcoke use was 41% in the 2021 financial year compared to 48% in the 2020 financial year, according to Mint News. Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement used 52% petcoke in its cement fuel in the fourth quarter of the 2021 financial year, which ended on 31 March 2021, compared to 70% in the year’s third quarter. In the same comparison periods, Aditya Birla subsidiary UltraTech Cement reduced its petcoke share to 30% from 77%. It replaced the fuel with 60% coal, compared to 10% in the third quarter of the 2021 financial year.
Petcoke prices more than doubled year-on-year to US$130/t in the fourth quarter of the 2021 financial year, leading cement producers to switch fuels. Coal prices have resultantly risen by 82% to US$100/t. Producers rely on imports for both commodities.
India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement plans to increase its installed cement production capacity in Eastern India by a further 4.8Mt/yr. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that its remaining planned upgrades in the region consist of a 2.3Mt/yr capacity expansion at a grinding plant in Odisha and a 2.5Mt/yr capacity expansion at a grinding plant in Bihar. The Odisha upgrade is scheduled for commissioning in mid-2021 and the Bihar upgrade is scheduled for commissioning in 2023. When both completed, the new lines will increase the producer’s cement capacity to 40Mt/yr.
The company says that it plans to announce further capital expenditure (capex) investments. It said that its subsidiary Murli Industries requires US$47.7 - 54.5m-worth of capex spending. It acquired the company, based in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, in the 2021 financial year. Managing director Puneet Dalmia said that the company would wait for greater economic certainty before launching the next round of expenditure. He said that the company’s aim is to become a national producer.
Dalmia Cement among Indian companies tightening safety measures amid second coronavirus spike
08 April 2021India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement and other companies are introducing a raft of new safety measures to counteract an increase in coronavirus cases, according to the Economic Times newspaper. The companies’ efforts include creating bio-bubbles for workers, reintroducing working from home where possible, changing shift patterns, conducting rapid testing and, not allowing outsiders into facilities without a negative coronavirus test and organising vaccination stations.
India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement has commenced commercial production of cement at the new 2.3Mt/yr production line of its Bengal Cement Works cement plant in Midnapore, West Bengal. The new line brings the plant’s total capacity to 4Mt/yr.
Chief operating officer Ujjwal Batria said, “To ensure that demand is met in a sustainable manner, we have deployed the latest machinery and technology at our Bengal Cement Works unit and will be aiming to produce 100% blended cement. This step is also in line with our commitment to become carbon negative by 2040.” He added, “Post the lockdown-led demand disruption, the cement sector has been continuously witnessing buoyancy across the country. This is largely led by revival in demand from the infrastructure and urban housing sectors, along with the demand from individual homebuilders and the government's rural housing schemes especially from east and central regions. Hence, the onset of commercial production at the Bengal Cement Works unit will enhance our ability to contribute towards nation building and Atmanirbhar Bharat, while also catering to the growing demand from the eastern and north-eastern states of the country.”
India: The Supreme Court has ruled that depository and clearing agent IL&FS Securities Services (ISSL) release US$52.4m to Dalmia Cement owner Dalmia Bharat. The money was alleged stolen by Allied Financial Services in 2019, according to the Economic Times newspaper. The trial concerning the alleged theft of mutual fund units continues.
Dalmia Cement completes new school building in Barunia
12 February 2021India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement has inaugurated a new school building that it has built in Barunia, Odisha. The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that the work was part of a US$7690 project which also included the refurbishment of two existing classrooms.

As a company, we have always believed in providing opportunities to the best of our capacity and helped in laying the foundation for a better life for everyone.
