Lafarge Canada sets up five-year donation to wild salmon project in British Columbia
02 January 2023Canada: Lafarge Canada has announced a five-year in-kind donation with the Nicomekl Enhancement Society (NES) in British Columbia. The agreement will see the building materials producer donate around US$15,000/yr in aggregates, concrete and labour to enhance the sustainability of the wild Pacific salmon population and ecosystem within the coastal area of the Nicomekl River.
Lincoln Kyne, Vice President and General Manager of Lafarge Canada in British Columbia and the US Pacific Northwest, said, “This key initiative led by NES is a great example, as we will be able to provide the required green construction materials and labour to stabilise, re-shore and line critical spawning beds for returning salmon until 2028.”
Canada: Lafarge Canada, part of Holcim, has contributed US$100,000 to a conservation effort undertaken in the sensitive Great Lakes region as a partner with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). In the future Lafarge Canada will provide additional support to enhance the conserved land's biodiversity and educational value.
At US$16m, the NCC's Manitoulin Island acquisition is one of its largest-ever in Ontario. Covering 7608 hectares, the Vidal Bay Forests and Shoreline property connects with adjacent conservation lands to form a protected area of more than 248km2 of forests, wetlands and shoreline, the largest of its kind south of the Canadian Shield in Ontario. Lafarge has a nearby 1640 hectare quarry in Meldrum Bay with two nearby international shipping terminals that service Ontario and the US.
Cementos Argos donates cement for local roads
26 January 2022Colombia: Cementos Argos has donated 21,500 bags (1075t) of cement to the Mayor's Office of Sogamoso to contribute to the rehabilitation of several main roads in Sogamoso, Boyacá and thus contribute to the improvement of the mobility of the municipality and benefit to more than 30,000 people. The company’s Sogamoso de Argos plant is in the vicinity.
“This donation has been fundamental for us. An acknowledgment, a thank you to Argos,” commented Rigoberto Alfonso, mayor of Sogamoso.
Lafarge Canada to supply ECOPact for sustainable affordable housing in Eastern Canada
11 October 2021Canada: Habitats for Humanity has again partnered with Lafarge Canada for its annual affordable housing fundraiser in Kingston, Ontario. This year, the partners will attempt to raise US$21,700 over 27 days to support the construction of sustainable housing in Eastern Canada. Lafarge Canada has pledged 80m3 of its ECOPact reduced-CO2 concrete to the project.
Eastern Canada regional head of environment and sustainability Rob Cumming said "Our sustainability goals overlap safe housing with reduced climate impact.” He added "We are excited about this first milestone and are looking forward to the future supply of our ECOPlanet solutions.”
Thailand: Siam Cement Group has furthered its contribution to the struggle against the Covid-19 pandemic with the opening of a modular intensive care unit (ICU) at Ratchapipat Hospital in Bangkok’s Thawi Watthana district, supported by donations from the company. The Nation newspaper has reported that the producer has donated around US$1m to the establishment of four new ICUs for the treatment of Covid-19 patients in partnership with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. All four units will be in operation by August 2021, according to the partners. Each unit will have the capacity to treat 10 patients.
Atotonilco de Tula municipal government supports Cemex’s Ecomunidad recycling initiative
11 June 2021Mexico: The municipal administration of Atotonilco de Tula, Hidalgo province, has given US$3050 to Cemex to help with the running of its Ecomunidad recycling initiative. In June 2021, the initiative involves recycling collection at 11 Cemex sites and has educated 11,000 people. Since its foundation at 20 local schools in 2019, the initiative has recycled 37t of plastic waste.
Cementos Portland Valderrivas donates food and sanitary products in Alcalá de Guadaíra
19 February 2021Spain: Cementos Portland Valderrivas has made donations worth Euro3000 of food and sanitary products to host communities in the neighbourhood of its Alcalá de Guadaíra cement plant in Seville. The company says that the donations are intended to support vulnerable families and groups affected by the coronavirus crisis.
Dangote Cement donates auto rickshaws to host communities
15 February 2021Nigeria: Dangote Cement has donated a total of 10 auto rickshaws to cement plant and limestone mine host communities in Akpata, Iwaa, Obajana and Owo. The Nigerian Tribune newspaper has reported that the aim of the donations is to support business and community transportation. Deputy general manager Ademola Adeyemi said that these fall under the company’s corporate social responsibility.
Cemex USA makes grants to over 80 non-profit organisations as part of coronavirus relief effort
29 December 2020US: Cemex USA has delivered grants via the Cemex Foundation to over 80 non-profit organisations so far in 2020 as part of its coronavirus relief efforts. The funds donated by Cemex USA employees have provided more than a quarter million meals to those facing food insecurity and overall have positively impacted more than 200,000 people in California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Florida. The initiative also supplied more than 20,000 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical staff and first responders.
“Covid-19 has created far-reaching impacts and unparalleled challenges, prompting thousands of families to request additional support for food and shelter while they continuously worry about the health and safety of themselves and their loved ones. At Cemex USA, we wanted to help our neighbours and communities during this unprecedented time,” said Cemex USA president Jaime Muguiro. “The help provided by non-profits right now is critical, and we are proud to be able to deliver significant support for their initiatives that are making a difference in our communities.”
Organisations that have benefited from the grants include: United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) in Birmingham, Alabama; Feeding South Florida in Florida; Feed the Frontline Houston in Houston, Texas; Lyons Emergency Assistance Fund (LEAF) in Lyons, Colorado; House of Refuge in South Mesa, Arizona; and Heart of Los Angeles Youth (HOLA) in Los Angeles, California.
Holcim Romania donates around Euro0.95m to local hospitals
28 December 2020Romania: Holcim Romania and its subsidiary Somaco have donated around Euro0.95m to local hospitals to help buy equipment to manage the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. 20 hospitals in the counties of Alba, Arad, Argeș, Bihor, Buzău, Cluj, Dâmbovița, Iași, Neamț, Prahova, Timiș, Vrancea and Bucharest will benefit from the funds. It will be used to buy protective gear and medical equipment such as medical monitors, ventilators and fans. This latest donation follows one in April 2020 bringing Holcim Romania’s total to around Euro1.5m.
