Bangladesh: Shahab Uddin, the Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, says that five cement plants near the Sundarbans mangrove forest region have been granted environmental clearance certification. The plants are Meghna Cement Mills, Bashundhara Cement Mills, Mongla Cement Mills, Dubai-Bangla Cement Mills and Holcim (Bangladesh), according to the New Nation newspaper. Uddin said that the units were all at least 6km away from the Sundarbans reserved forest area and that the Department of Environment was monitoring their emissions on a regular basis. In 1995 the government declared a 10km area around the Sundarbans Reserve Forest as a ‘critical’ ecological zone.
Bangladesh: Lafarge Holcim Bangladesh has completed its purchase of Holcim Cement Bangladesh for US$60.2m. The deal includes three cement grinding mills with a total production capacity of 2.2Mt/yr. Lafarge Holcim Bangladesh, formerly known as Lafarge Surma Cement, is a joint venture between LafargeHolcim, Cementos Molins and other local partners.
Lafarge Surma Cement to buy Holcim Bangladesh
15 December 2016Bangladesh: Lafarge Surma Cement, a joint venture between LafargeHolcim and Cementos Molins, intends to buy a 100% stake in Holcim Bangladesh from LafargeHolcim for US$117m. The transaction is subject to approval by the shareholders of Lafarge Surma as well as other regulatory and customary approvals in Bangladesh. Following the acquisition Lafarge Surma Cement will operate one integrated cement plant and three grinding plants in the country. It will also offer a range of products including Supercrete, Holcim Strong Structure, Holcim Red and Holcim Gold.
Sumanta Pandit appointed new CEO of Holcim Cement (Bangladesh) Ltd
12 February 2015Bangladesh: Sumanta Pandit has been appointed as CEO of Holcim Cement (Bangladesh) Ltd. Pandit joins Holcim Bangladesh from Emirates Cement, a subsidiary of UltraTech India, where he was heading the business in Bangladesh as country manager.
Prior to this, Pandit worked for various multinational cement companies in different management positions. During his long career in the cement industry, Pandit has worked in Switzerland, Oman, Kuwait, Sri Lanka and Sudan. With 22 years of exposure in the industry, he brings with him considerable regional and international experience. He holds an honours degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Mumbai.
