Iran: Abdul Reza Sheikhan, the secretary of the Cement Industry Association, has warned that an increase to maritime shipping rates is further restricting exports in conjunction with US-backed trade sanctions. He said that the country has a production capacity of 87.5Mt/yr, that 48Mt is consumed domestically and that less than 15% is exported, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. He also identified ‘negative’ competition between cement producers over exports has damaged the industry. To counter this, export teams in the east, west and south of the country have been formed.
The country exports cement to 17 countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region, Bangladesh and countries in Africa. It is the sixth largest exporter in the world.
Iran losing export markets
28 September 2015Iran: Iran is gradually losing its domestic and foreign cement markets, according to Abdolreza Sheikhan, secretary of Iran's Cement Industry Employers Association. Iran's cement industry has lost some 8% of its domestic market and 20% of its export markets in the first five months of current fiscal year (21 March 2015 to 22 August 2015).
"Cement supply and demand is not balanced in the market and this has created problems for producers," said Sheikhan. However he did not disclose exact statistics about the country's cement sales. However, each cement producing plant is permitted to store clinker equal to two months output. This means that up to 5Mt of surplus clinker could be stored in the country at any one time.
Iran produces over 38Mt of cement in six months
07 October 2013Iran: Iran produced 38.4Mt of cement in the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on 21 March 2013, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). This is a 6% rise year-on-year from the same period in the previous year.
In September 2013, the chairman of the Iranian cement employers association said that Iran was the fourth leading cement producer in the world and the top producer in the Middle East. The country's cement production is forecast to be 80Mt/yr by the end of the current Iranian calendar year.
