PPC Zimbabwe invests US$75m on Harare plant in 2015
11 March 2015Zimbabwe: PPC Zimbabwe intends to invest US$75m in 2015 on its Harare cement mill to develop its export market. The mill will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2016 according to PPC Zimbabwe managing director Njombo Lekula. The cement producer is also spending US$6.4m on production upgrades at its Bulawayo and Colleen Bawn cement plants.
Lekula told local press that PPC Zimbabwe's export market had been cut by 40% due to the strengthening of the US dollar. However, he expected the export market to improve in the remainder of 2015.
Cement ball mill to become Kandos museum exhibit
11 February 2015Australia: The Kandos Bicentennial Industrial Museum has moved a ball mill from the former Cement Australia Kandos plant to its collection. The aim is to make the mill the centre of the museum's external collection, according to local press.
"We were very lucky to be offered the ball mill by Cement Australia," said Dr Buzz Sanderson, president of the Kandos Museum. "When Cement Australia decided to demolish the Kandos Cement Works, it asked us which parts we wanted to exhibit at the museum and the ball mill was one of them. There was a plan at one stage to place the ball mill down near the railway station at the entrance to town but there were just too many safety concerns."
The ball mill will be placed beside the Kandos Museum to give visitors to the museum a sense of how the machinery worked when it was in operation. The museum has had three sections cut away from the machine that will allow guests to look inside and see the inner workings of the machine.
Misr Beni Suef Cement to build coal mill
22 October 2014Egypt: Misr Beni Suef Cement has reached an agreement to build a coal mill worth US$27.9m in 12 months.
"The project will be funded through self-financing and loans," said Misr Beni Suef. The company expects the project to be completed by the end of 2015. Egypt is currently struggling with blackouts and the government has cut natural gas supplies to plants, which has prompted cement companies to switch to coal.
Egypt's natural gas production has been declining for years. Production in January 2014 was down by 10% from January 2013, according to the most recent government figures. In September 2014, the Egyptian government began to allow coal imports despite environmental concerns from the high pollution coal emits.
Loesche completes work on world’s largest slag mill for Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co
21 July 2014China: Loesche GmbH has completed work on the largest slag mill in the world for Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co (TISCO) in Taiyuan, China achieving a new record product rate of producing 255t/hr blast-furnace slag meal. The Loesche type LM 63.3+3 vertical mill for grinding granulated blastfurnace slag was originally ordered by the Taigang Group International Trade Co in September 2011. It started operation in March 2014.
At the TISCO steelworks the LM 63.3+3 has now been used for the pure grinding of granulated blast-furnace slag for the first time. The mill is driven by a motor with an output of 7400kW, the most powerful motor to have been installed so far by Loesche in a mill. The projected guarantee values of 255t/ hr granulated blast-furnace slag at a fineness of 4400 Blaine are reliably attained here. This is also ensured by the newly developed Loesche LDC classifier, used in the grinding plant and ideally customised to the Loesche mills.
The first Loesche LM 63.3+3 mill started production at Nallalingayapalli, India in 2009. It attains a peak value of 367t/hr ordinary portland cement at 3000 Blaine or 371t/hr portland pozzolana cement at 3400 Blaine.
Turkey: Gebr. Pfeiffer SE has received another order from Bolu Cimento Sanayii A.S., Turkey. Pfeiffer supply an MPS 4500 BC mill for the grinding of granulated blast furnace slag, which will be set up at Bolu Province plant. The mill will be identical to the cement mill that will be installed in Kazan.
The mill is designed to reach a throughput rate of 85t/hr of slag, ground to a product fineness of 4500 - 4750cm²/g. Gebr. Pfeiffer's scope will include the core components of the mill and classifier as well as the mill gearbox. The required drawings and parts lists for the local manufacture of housing and steel parts as well as documents for quality control will also be produced and supplied.
The delivery of the mill scheduled to start at the end of 2014 and will have been completed by early 2015.

Liberia: HeidelbergCement has commissioned a new 0.5Mt/yr, US$14m cement mill at its cement grinding plant in Monrovia, Liberia. The German cement producer operates in Liberia through a subsidiary, Cemenco. It is the only cement producer in the country.
"The construction of the new cement mill in Liberia is in line with our strategy of modernising and expanding clinker and cement capacities in emerging markets," said Dr Bernd Scheifele, Chairman of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement. "In Ghana, we recently increased the cement grinding capacity at our Tema cement plant and are currently building a new cement mill in Takoradi. Together with our existing plants in this region, the new mill in Liberia strengthens our coastal network in West Africa."
Investment in the new cement grinding facility in Liberia includes a two-chambered 65t/hr ball mill with high-efficiency separator, filter, fan and flow meter. The power supply of the new cement-grinding mill is provided through a 5.7MW generator plant on a rental basis.
HeidelbergCement is currently conducting investment projects in sub-Saharan Africa amounting to almost US$400m. They include expansion projects of cement capacity of about 3Mt and of clinker capacity of 1.5Mt.
