Eastern Province Cement and Sinoma CDI conclude Khursaniyah cement plant Line 5 contract

Saudi Arabia: Eastern Province Cement Company has entered into a contract with China National Building Material subsidiary Sinoma CDI to build its Khursaniyah cement plant’s upcoming 10,000t/day Line 5. Mubasher News has reported the value of the contract as US$271m. The contract includes engineering, supply, construction, installation, testing, operation and training services on a complete turnkey basis.

CEO Fahd bin Rashid Al-Otaibi said “The project aims to replace some low-efficiency production lines, enhancing energy efficiency and the company's capacity to meet local demand. This initiative aligns with the kingdom's vision to maximise shareholder returns and support future infrastructure projects that improve quality of life.”

The company secured approval from its board to award the contract to Sinoma CDI in January 2024.

Huaxin Cement Tanzania Maweni Company’s new plant to export cement

Tanzania: Huaxin Cement Tanzania Maweni Company has successfully commenced operations at its new Mavini plant. INPR News has reported that the plant will export cement to other countries. This will generate economic growth whilst also creating 1000 new jobs for local people, according to the company.

Cimaf Gabon plans US$147m Meba cement plant

29 February 2024

Gabon: Cimaf Gabon is considering establishing a new $147m cement plant in Meba, Estuaire Province. This will help to end Cimaf Gabon's dependence on clinker imports and raise its total cement production capacity by 18% from 850,000t/yr to 1Mt/yr, against local demand of 600,000t/yr.

Managing director Janah Idrissi El Mehdi said "We currently import €32.6m/yr-worth of clinker. The idea behind this investment is to be able to enhance the local industrial fabric and at the same time enable job creation in the order of 1500 jobs in the project phase and 500 jobs in the operating phase. And also in parallel a stabilisation of cement prices."

Heidelberg Materials Benelux to invest €450m in Antoing cement plant carbon capture project

29 February 2024

Belgium: Heidelberg Materials Benelux will invest €450m in its Anthemis project, involving the installation of an 800,000t/yr carbon capture system, at its Antoing cement plant. The project is scheduled for completion in 2029. Captured CO2 will travel by pipeline to the North Sea for storage.

Ugandan government grants mining licence for West China Cement-related project

28 February 2024

Uganda: The government has granted a 21-year mining licence to Sunbird Resources to support a cement plant project near the border with Kenya. The licence will allow the local company, which is working with China-based West China Cement, to mine limestone, according to Reuters. The partners intend to build a 1Mt/yr integrated cement plant.

Eqiom’s Lumbres cement plant upgrade to expand capacity by 57%

26 February 2024

France: Eqiom plans to expand its Lumbres cement plant by 57% from 700,000t/yr to 1.1Mt/yr by 2026. The project involves the installation of a new kiln and aims to reduce the plant's CO2 emissions by 20%, its fuel consumption by 35% and its NOx and SO2 emissions by 40% and 80% respectively. The producer plans to invest €300m, including €40m from France Relance funds.

Shree Cement breaks ground on Etah and Prayagraj cement plant projects

23 February 2024

India: Shree Cement has begun construction of two new 3.5Mt/yr cement plants at Etah and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. The Hindustan Times newspaper has reported that the projects represent the company’s delivery on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh government, that it signed in February 2023. The producer aims to reach 9Mt/yr in installed capacity in Uttar Pradesh by February 2026, with estimated investments of US$241m. It currently operates a 2Mt/yr integrated cement plant at Bulandshahr.

The company said "The company’s 3.5Mt/yr plant in Etah is expected to be operational in the next 12 months, while another 3.5Mt/yr plant will be set up in Prayagraj, targeting production commencement in 24 months."

UltraTech Cement commissions expanded Kotputli cement plant

23 February 2024

India: UltraTech Cement has commissioned 1.8Mt/yr of new cement capacity at its Kotputli cement plant in Rajasthan. The expanded plant will help the producer to serve markets in Rajasthan and the National Capital Region. Projects Today News has reported that the expansion is part of a 22.6Mt/yr capacity growth drive, first announced in June 2022. The latest commissioning has raised UltraTech Cement’s all-India capacity by 1.3% to 137Mt/yr, and that in Rajasthan by 11% to 18.9Mt/yr.

Arabian Cement Company’s Rabigh cement plant mills project concludes successfully

23 February 2024

Saudi Arabia: Sinoma Overseas Development completed start-up testing and hand-over of new grinding mills at Arabian Cement Company’s Rabigh cement on 21 February 2024. The supplier said that the delivery was in accordance with the terms of the original contract between its parent company, China National Building Material (CNBM), and the producer.

Sinoma Overseas Development attributed deviations from the project’s previously announced schedule to the need for discussions with CNBM about remaining project works, equipment operation plans, procurement schedules and acceptance tests. As provided for in the contract, the work will be subject to a 5% delay penalty.

Ignacio Arroyo appointed plant director at Aalborg Portland

21 February 2024

Denmark: Aalborg Portland has appointed Ignacio Arroyo as its plant director.

Arroyo started his career working for Holcim in 1998 as a project manager at the Carboneras Plant in Spain. Other roles in Spain followed before he became the Operation Manager at the Yeles plant in 2012. He then worked as Technical Director and Plant Manager at Holcim’s National Cement Factory in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Subsequent roles included Plant Manager positions in Holcim Romania and Lafarge Canada.
