Prison sentences for former Iraqi Cement executive and general manager
02 September 2021Iraq: The Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has sentenced former Iraqi Cement executive director Baha Abed and general manager Ali Hadi to six years in prison. According to the National Iraqi News Agency, Abed appointed Hadi as general manager in exchange for Hadi referring the company’s equipment contracts to Abed’s own companies.
Workers jailed in Dangote Cement truck fraud
15 January 2019Nigeria: Four workers of Dangote Cement have been jailed for stealing cement worth over US$40,000. The defendants diverted nine cement trucks, bound for Togo, using fake identity cards and truck number plates, according to the Punch newspaper. Adewale Dalmeida, a fleet analyst, at the Ibese Plant, worked with the chief driver of the company, Ibrahim Lawal, and a Ghanaian driver, Lukman Adam, and Afeez Olaniba, who worked as an agent at the Nigerian-Benin border. The prison sentences imposed range from a 18 months to five years.
Colombia: Édgar Ramírez Martínez, the former vice president of planning for Cemex, will be detained in prison as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the acquisition of land at Maceo in Antioquia for the construction of a cement plant. The prosecutor’s court has also issued a detention ticket for Camilo González Téllez, former vice president of planning for Cemex Colombia, who is currently in the US, according to Noticias Financieras. Eugenio Correa Díaz, the former representative of CI Calizas y Minerales, which sold the property to the cement producer, will also be detained.
The former employees of Cemex allegedly paid over US$13m to Correa, despite being aware of the fact that the property was in the process of being expropriated over unpaid taxes.
China: Yang Yongzheng has resigned as a non-executive director of China Tianrui Group Cement Company due to a prison sentence. Yang has also resigned as a member of the group’s nomination committee. He has been replaced on the nomination committee by Li Liufa, the chairman of the company.
