Heidelberg Materials rolls out EvoZero cement across Europe

23 October 2025

Europe: Germany-based Heidelberg Materials has begun deliveries of EvoZero carbon-captured cement to customers across Europe. Subsidiary Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe produces EvoZero cement at its net-zero Brevik cement plant in Norway. Early adopters to purchase the product include Sweden-based Skanska for its construction of the Skøyen metro station in Oslo, Norway.

Heidelberg Materials launched a 400,000t/yr, 50% carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant at the Brevik plant on 18 June 2025. The plant’s capture and storage data are verified by certification organisation DNV Business Assurance Germany and digitally recorded in Heidelberg Materials' proprietary Carbon Bank.

CEO Dr Dominik von Achten said "I am proud and pleased that the entire process chain is now in place and that our CCS plant in Brevik is now directly contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions in construction. EvoZero is proof of our commitment to driving real measurable decarbonisation and leading the transformation of the construction industry."

Heidelberg Materials launches cement-free hemp lime product

09 October 2025

France: Heidelberg Materials has launched a new range of its Socli lime product that contains hemp. The product is available in two binder and two coating formulations that combine natural hydraulic lime and plant fibres. Formulated for hempcrete bio-based concrete applications, on vertical walls or for insulating intermediate floors, its high lime content increases durability, according to the producer.

Heidelberg Materials says that the Socli lime range is especially suited to the restoration of historic buildings, as it guarantees breathable walls and healthy indoor air, and prevents mould, while providing thermal and acoustic insulation. The absence of cement further increases hygrometric regulation and thermal insulation.

Martin Engineering launches updated railcar opener

28 August 2025

US: Martin Engineering has launched its two-wheeled Martin Gen 4 Railcar Opener. It is designed to aid bulk handlers to unload unprocessed and processed bulk materials from rail transport to facilities, including cement plants and terminals. The fourth generation product is intended to improve ease of use and reduce potential hazards for workers.

Features of the latest version of the railcar opener include simple manoeuvrability and lateral turning wheels for moving capstans, outrigger support and height adjustment. A ‘stepped’ drive tip is also intended to improve the gate opener’s contact with the capstan. This new design boosts efficiency, leading to less demurrage from stalling and a safer workplace.

Marty Yepsen, Business Development Manager for Railcar Unloading Products at Martin Engineering said “We’re excited about the 4th generation of this model because it’s been painstakingly designed over years using real-world feedback from customers.” He continued, “The nearly effortless single operator design transforms a hazardous and gruelling job into a comparatively routine and risk-free task,” Yepsen concluded. “Field tests have shown that the Gen 4 not only improves efficiency, which lowers demurrage, but it also increases safety and reduces labour costs. All this drives down operating costs and boosts ROI.”

Martin Engineering builds products for bulk materials handling. The company has its headquarters in Neponset, Illinois. It runs subsidiaries in Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Spain, South Africa, Türkiye, the UK and the US.

18 July 2025

India: JSW Cement has launched CHD Waterguard, a water-repellent slag-based cement designed for the high-moisture conditions of southern India. The product uses ‘Turbo Gel’ Technology, which the company says ensures a polymer-enriched ‘hydration matrix’ for improved workability and compressive strength.

CEO Nilesh Narwekar said “The tropical climate of Southern India, with its intense humidity, coastal salt air and heavy monsoons, compromises the longevity of concrete structures. With CHD Waterguard, we’re offering a specialised solution that actively protects homes from seepage, dampness, salt corrosion and moisture-related damage.”
