Committee reviews Chakwal cement plant plans

28 September 2022

Pakistan: The Punjab Assembly has constituted a committee to review proposed plans for a new cement plant in Chakwal in the Province's Rawalpindi Division. Protestors have previously complained about plans to the Punjab Environment Protection Agency. The Dawn newspaper has reported that stated concerns include the threat to the local water supply, damage to future tourism promotion and possible harm to endangered species, including autochthonous wild sheep.

Nuvoco Vistas launches Double Bull cement brand in northern India

India: Nuvoco Vistas is promoting its products in Northern India with the launch of its Double Bull cement brand in the region. As part of the initiative it has increased its dealer network in the states of Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. It is also preparing to build a 1.2Mt/yr grinding plant at Bhiwani in Haryana to support its presence in the north of the country.

The cement producer manufactures Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Portland Slag Cement (PSC), Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) and Portland Composite Cement (PCC) products. Its flagship brands include the Concreto, Duraguard and Double Bull products.

Eastern Freight Corridor railway's Punjab section to open in 2022

25 May 2022

India: Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) says that it will inaugurate the 82km Punjab section of the upcoming Eastern Freight Corridor railway before the end of 2022. The line will form part of the 175km Punjab - Uttar Pradesh section and connect Western Indian cement plants and other industries by high-speed link with Central markets. Workers will divert the existing railway between Mandi Gobindgarh and Sirhind to make way for the line.

DFCCIL previously inaugurated the corridor's central Bhaupur - Khurja section in Uttar Pradesh in January 2021.

New Punjab cement plant and two cement plant expansions approved

Pakistan: The Cabinet Committee on Legislative Business of the Punjab government has licenced the establishment of a new cement plant in the state. The News newspaper has reported that the committee also approved the expansion of two existing cement plants.

Punjab government implements groundwater charge for cement producers

Pakistan: The government of the Punjab will charge cement producers in the state up to US$0.93/m3 for ground water used in their cement production. The Dawn newspaper has reported that the charge will depend on water availability, and be US$0.6/m3 in water secure areas, US$0.85/m3 in semi-critical areas and US$0.93/m3 in critical areas most affected by drought. The measure aims to encourage rainwater harvesting in order to preserve water tables. The charges will fall upon Maple Leaf Cement, Gharibwal Cement, Dandot Cement, Flying Cement, Askari Cement and Fauji Cement. They will remain in force until the establishment of a Punjab Water Services Regulatory Authority and its enactment of water extraction rates.

Ambuja Cement to upgrade Ropar grinding plant

02 August 2021

India: Ambuja Cement plans to spend around US$42m on upgrading its Ropar grinding plant in Punjab. The unit will have its capacity increased by 1.5Mt to 4.5Mt/yr by June 2023. It will install a new vertical roller mill and will produce cement using fly ash. The expansion is part of the company’s aim to reach a cement production capacity of 50Mt/yr.

Ambuja Cement increases sales and profit in first half of 2021

26 July 2021

India: Ambuja Cement recorded sales of US$930m in the first half of 2021, up by 41% year-on-year from US$659m in the same period in 2020. Cement sales volumes grew by 36% to 13.5Mt from 9.95Mt. Its profit after tax was US$186m, up by 63% from US$114m.

“This performance resulted from strong growth in sales of premium products and successful execution of efficiency improvement programs which has partly been impacted by rising energy and raw material costs. Synergies under the master supply agreement have significantly benefited both Ambuja and ACC as we leverage our national footprint,” said Neeraj Akhoury, the chief executive officer of Holcim in India and the managing director of Ambuja Cement.

The company also announced that its board has approved a 1.5Mt/yr expansion project at its Ropar grinding plant in Punjab.

Ambuja Cement Foundation partners with Talwani Sabo Power Limited for Punjab self-help schemes

India: Ambuja Cement Foundation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Vedanta Limited subsidiary Talwani Sabo Power Limited (TSPL). India Blooms News has reported that the partners plan to promote 200 self-help groups in Mansa district, Punjab. The groups’ focus will be on the empowerment of women. Under the memorandum of understanding, the partnership will establish at least three independent enterprises to address community problems in the district.

Managing director and chief executive officer Pearl Tiwari said, “As our major focus is on women, gender and livelihoods, our new partnership with TSPL will further support us to drive impactful initiatives under the women empowerment programme and enhance our already existing programmes in Punjab.”

Up to 16 new cement plants under construction in Punjab

Pakistan: Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar says that up to 16 cement plants are being set up in the province. DG Khan will operate three of the new plants, according to the Frontier Star newspaper. Buzdar made the comments at a political meeting in late April 2021.

Bestway Cement lobbies Punjab provincial minister certification for three planned cement plants

22 February 2021

Pakistan: The Punjab provincial minister for industries and trade Mian Aslam Iqbal says that the government will soon issue new no objection certificates (NOC) to Bestway Cement for three of its new plant projects in the region. The Nation newspaper has reported that a delegation from the cement producer met the minister in late February 2021 to discuss its plans to establish new plants in Attock, Khushab and Mainwali. The company does not currently have NOCs for the planned projects.
