05 August 2022

India: Dalmia Bharat sold 6.2Mt of cement in the first quarter of its 2023 financial year, up by 27% year-on-year from 4.9Mt in the first quarter of its 2022 financial year. Its sales revenues also rose by 27%, to US$417m from US$327m. Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Managing Director and CEO Mahendra Singhi said “I am pleased with our performance this quarter. Our sustained efforts on operational efficiencies and cost rationalisation have enabled us to mitigate the adverse impact of inflation and deliver our lowest total cost of production. Our capacity expansion projects are on track, and we have added 2Mt/yr of clinker capacity and 1.1Mt/yr of cement capacity, which takes our cement capacity to 37Mt/yr. We remain firm on our Carbon Negative Roadmap, and during the quarter have installed 41.4MW of renewable energy infrastructure.”

Cemex inaugurates Carbon Neutral Alliance at Rüdersdorf cement plant

01 June 2022

Germany: Cemex has inaugurated the Carbon Neutral Alliance at its integrated Rüdersdorf cement plant. The initiative is intended to accelerate the development of the site into the world’s first carbon-neutral cement facility by 2030. Jörg Steinbach, Brandenburg’s Minister of the Economy, Fernando A Gonzalez, the chief executive officer of Cemex, the Mexican ambassador to Germany and representatives from Sasol attended the event.

The Carbon Neutral Alliance comprises a network of over 20 private and public organisations, dedicated to industrial decarbonisation. Among the technologies being introduced at Rüdersdorf include a waste heat recovery project scheduled for the summer of 2022, the development of renewable energy generation and a scheme to produce aviation fuel onsite in coordination with Sasol and Enertrag.

In 2020 Cemex announced its decarbonisation target of reducing its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This target is expected to be achieved in Europe in 2022. By 2030, Cemex intends to reduce emissions at its European sites by 55%, in line with European Union's new strategy to reduce CO2 emissions. Cemex has also announced its goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in concrete by 2050.

Adani Group to acquire Holcim India

16 May 2022

India: Holcim has agreed to sell its Indian business to industry, energy and ports conglomerate Adani Group for US$6.37bn. The assets consist of a 63% stake in Ambuja Cement, which in turn owns 50% of ACC, and a 4.5% direct stake in ACC.

ACC and Ambuja Cement employ 10,700 people and operate 31 cement plants in India. The deal will make Adani Group India’s second-largest cement producer.

Chair Gautam Adani said "With Holcim's global leadership in sustainability, we are acquiring some of the most efficient building materials operations in India, powered with clean technologies like heat recovery systems. We recognise that Ambuja and ACC operations are energy intensive and therefore, when combined with our renewable power generation capabilities, we gain a big head start in the decarbonisation journey that is a must for Indian industry."

Holcim says that its focus is now on expanding its solutions and products business. Reuters News has reported that the group plans to put the proceeds of the assets’ sale towards lower-carbon acquisitions. Its Indian operations contributed 26% of group CO2 emissions.

Chief executive officer Jan Jenisch said "We will always make cement, but we will decarbonise cement.” He added “We are happy to build up other segments like building solutions and products."
