Karl Haider appointed as head of Semperit
12 January 2022Austria: Semperit AG Holding has appointed Karl Haider as its new chief executive officer (CEO). His tenure will last until the end of March 2024. He succeeds Martin Füllenbach, who resigned from his position prematurely at the end of September 2021. Since that time, chief financial officer Petra Preining and chief operation officer Kristian Brok have assumed the responsibilities of a CEO on an interim basis.
Haider recently worked as the Chief Commercial Officer at Tata Steel Europe. At Tata Steel, he had previously also led major merger and acquisition transactions and served as Director Operations Downstream. Prior to that, he was a member of the board of Voestalpine's high performance metals division, having held sales and project management positions in the group. He started his career as a chemical laboratory technician and subsequently studied technical chemistry at the Johannes Kepler University Linz.
Semperit develops and produces specialised rubber products for the industrial and medical sectors, selling them in over 100 countries around the world. Its products for the cement industry include conveyor belts. The company has its headquarters in Vienna.
Austria: Semperit has appointed Gabriele Schallegger as its chief financial officer (CFO) with effect from October 2020. Her term of office will end in October 2023.
Schallegger, aged 48 years, studied business administration in Graz and Exeter in the UK followed by several international management programmes, including one in St. Gallen, Switzerland. She most recently worked as the finance director of the Uncoated Fine Paper division at Mondi. Prior to this she held the position of CFO of Mondi Syktyvkar in Russia as well as finance director of the Kraft Paper Business division. She started her career in auditing and tax consulting at Arthur Andersen in Vienna. Subsequently she worked for the American pharmaceutical company Baxter and the Norwegian Orkla Foods Group, among others.
She succeeds Petra Preining, who had taken over the CFO role on an interim basis and will return to the supervisory board and audit committee of Semperit in October 2020.
Semperit develops, produces and sells a wide variety of products including conveyor belts, escalator handrails, construction profiles, cable car rings, products for railway superstructures, rubber products for the medical and industrial sectors and hydraulic and industrial hoses.
Sempertrans USA officially opens Atlanta warehouse
13 July 2018US: Sempertrans USA has officially opened its new Atlanta warehouse in Georgia. The event was attended by distributors and end-customers. The Sempertrans USA team which includes sales, customer service, technical management and finance moved into the new location in December 2017. At the beginning of June 2018 Sempertrans USA was able to process, cut and slit to order and distribute heavy-duty textile belts from the unit. Sempertrans belts from the site can be slit within 24 hours and then distributed across North America.
“Our North America Team is ready to tackle any challenge. From impact and abrasion resistant belt solutions, our wide product portfolio ensures safe and highly efficient conveying even under the most demanding conditions,” said Wes Tyre, Head of Sales North America.
Sempertrans is a conveyor belt manufacturer. Its portfolio includes textile belts and steel cord belts for applications in the cement, mining and steel industries as well as other applications such as ports, quarries and the chemical industry.
Semperit closes Shandong plant
19 June 2018China: Austria’s Semperit has closed its Sempertrans Best (Shandong) Belting plant in Shandong. The decision was made as part of review of the group’s production footprint. The plant had a higher margin than other sites. The closure is also expected to reduce the complexity of operations at the group level. 120 employees will be affected and the shutdown is expected to burden the group’s earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) by Euro10m in 2018.
The groups subsidiary in Shandong was founded by Semperit as a joint venture with the state-owned energy company Wang Chao Coal & Electricity Group in 2010. The Chinese partner currently holds a 16.1% stake. The production site manufactures textile and steel cord belts and has served the export markets and the Chinese market so far.
Sempertrans and Shaw Almex to end cooperation agreement in North American conveyor belt market
16 November 2017US/Austria: Sempertrans USA, part of Semperit Group, and Shaw Almex Industries have agreed to end a cooperation agreement for the North American conveyor belt market. The agreement was originally set up in 2016. Sempertrans USA has set up a sales and distribution organisation for conveyor belts in North America and it will use this to serve its customers. Tim Shaw, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Shaw Almex, said that both companies had agreed that it would be better if they acted independently so that they could be more ‘flexible’ in handling their respective customers.
Brazil: The Sempertrans division of the Semperit Group and the Agudio brand of Leitner have started operation of their ‘flyingbelt’ conveying system, a combination of ropeway and conveyor belt, at the LafargeHolcim cement plant in Barroso, Minas Gerais. The conveying belt is suspended on ropes connecting a limestone quarry to the plant. It can convey 1500t/hr of limestone at a height of up to 36m. The 7km belt is the longest of its kind in the world.
"With the Agudio ‘flyingbelt’ we have installed a very innovative bulk materials transportation system. The Sempertrans conveyor belt not only overcomes - at great height - terrain that can only be accessed with difficulty, it also transports material efficiently and in an environmentally-friendly way. More than 40 truck journeys are saved every hour," said Thomas Fahnemann, CEO of Semperit Group.
The order was produced in the Sempertrans plant in France and shipped to Brazil. The electricity consumption of the new conveyor equipment is only around one third of that of conventional ropeway systems and, instead of the previous maximum of 400t/hr, 1500t/hr of limestone can now be transported.
