China: Huaxin Cement’s sales and profit fell in the first half of 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak. It said that the health situation, “resulted in grave insufficient demand in the markets of main products and rapid slump in price, coupled with restrictions on personnel flow and traffic, equipment maintenance plan was affected severely.” The cement producer disposed of medical waste for free at its Yangxin, Wuxue and Yichang plants before the market recovered in the second quarter.

Huaxin’s sales revenue fell by 12.7% year-on-year to US$1.84bn in the first half of 2020 from US$2.11bn in the same period in 2019. Its net profit dropped by 29% to US$330m from US$463m. Cement sales and concrete volumes declined by 8% to 32.7Mt. The company also started clinker production at its 2Mt/yr Jizzakh cement plant in Uzbekistan in June 2020.

Uzbekistan: State-owned Uzpromstroymaterialy has announced the start of cement production at a new 0.1Mt/yr integrated cement plant, called the Qurilish Ashyo Sifat Servis cement plant, in Fergana Region following a total investment of US$25.0m. The company has reported that the new plant represents part of the country’s efforts to increase its installed cement capacity by 60% to 20.0Mt/yr in 2020 from 12.5Mt/yr in 2019.

Uzbekistan: Uzpromstroymaterialy and South Korea-based Caris have formed an 80:20 public-private partnership for the establishment of a 1.5Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Berinuy region at a cost of US$350m. The Cement and Applications Journal has reported that the upcoming plant, called the Caris Karakalpak Cement, will generate sales worth US$182m/yr and profit of US$126m/yr, according to the owners.

Uzbekistan: Uzbekqurilishmateriallari deputy chair Ulugbek Abrayev has said that Uzbek cement production capacity will total 20.0Mt/yr before 1 January 2021, up by 60% year-on-year from 12.5Mt at the start of 2020. Abrayev added that, due to growing demand, Uzbekistan will produce 14.5Mt in 2021, corresponding to 73% utilisation of projected capacity. A total of ten cement plant projects across eight of the country’s 12 regions are due for completion in 2020 and 2021.

Uzbekistan: South Korea-based Caris is considering build a cement plant in the Beruni region of Karakalpakstan. This follows the completion of geological studies in conjunction with the local government, according to the Dunyo News Agency. Caris is now working on a feasibility study for the project before arranging finance.

Uzbekistan: Akhangarantsement says that it has installed a ThyssenKrupp raw materials grinding unit at the site of an upcoming 5Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Tashkent Region. The equipment consists of a jaw crusher for primary crushing and a hammer mill for secondary crushing. The company said that the upcoming plant will “provide the market with a line of high-quality products for the construction of housing, industrial and infrastructure facilities.”

Uzbekistan: China-based Huaxin Cement has successfully ignited the kiln at its 2Mt/yr Jizzakh cement plant in Jizzakh Oblast. 200 employees attended the plant’ opening ceremony, which was streamed by video link to Huaxin Cement’s global headquarters in Wuhan Province. Huaxin Cement president Li Yeqing said, “Everyone has done a very good job, demonstrating the company's strength and personnel capabilities.” Trial operation had been due to begin in April 2020, but was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Uzbekistan: The government has announced the sale of shares in UzAssets, an investment company founded to privatise its 36% stake in Qizilqumsement. The Information Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan (DUNYO) has reported that Qizilqumsement is a 51% subsidiary of Uzpromstroymaterialy, with the remainder held by private minority shareholders. Qizilqumsement operates the 3.8Mt/yr Qizilqumsement cement plant in Navoi, Navoiy Region.

Uzbekistan: JV Pro Euro Cement has announced the start of construction of an integrated cement plant in Namangan Region. Trend News Agency has reported that Czech Republic-based PSP Engineering will oversee procurement, construction and installation of the plant, with the support of Netherlands-based Arona International. The plant’s scheduled completion date is in mid-2023.

Uzbekistan: Russia-based Eurocement subsidiary Akhangaran Cement said that it shipped 180,000t of cement in May 2020, up by 11% year-on-year from 163,000t in May 2019. Uzbekistan Newsline has reported that the increase resulted from a combination of production modernisation, business process efficiency improvement and personnel training and development.

Akhangaran Cement general director Gennady Kulikov said, “Despite the special mode of operation associated with the coronavirus pandemic, the enterprise team at all stages of the technological process is set to work efficiently. Together with the achievements of high production results, employees pay special attention to ensuring industrial safety, production culture and organisation of workplaces.” The Akhangaran Cement cement plant’s new 3.0Mt integrated line is due for completion in mid-late 2020. It will enable the company to serve 100% of demand in the Toshkent region and 30% of Uzbekistan’s total domestic demand of 17.3Mt/yr.
