Mexico: The Mexican Ready-Mix Concrete Industry Association (AMIC) says that European natural gas shortages and disruptions to the supply of oil, chemicals and other goods as a result of the conflict in Ukraine may cause a rise in the cost of global cement production.

AMIC president Ana Laura Burciaga said "Having a conflict that delays the arrival of these products can make them more expensive because they would have to be obtained from more expensive sources due to shortages.” Burciaga continued "The area where the conflict is taking place was a major supplier of gas and we are concerned that this will have repercussions, especially in terms of a price increase when we have just suffered a very significant one of a magnitude we had not seen for many years."

Switzerland: Holcim’s full-year 2021 results show a 16% year-on-year rise in the group’s consolidated sales to US$28.3bn from US$24.4bn. Its recurring earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 26% to US$5bn from US$3.98bn. The group’s net debt also rose, by 18% to US$10.8bn from US$9.17bn.

Indonesia: Indonesia Power says that it has processed coal fly ash and bottom ash from its Adipala power plant into building materials, including cement-free ready-mix concrete, concrete blocks, paving slabs and refractory casts. The energy company also supplies ash to mine reclamation and water neutralisation projects, according to LKBN Antara News. In total, it reused 135,000t of ash by-products in 2021. The company generates 85,000t/yr fly ash and bottom ash.

Sinar Tambang Arthaestari has previous targeted Indonesia Power’s ash products for use in its cement production.

Bangladesh: Seven Rings Cement has signed an agreement to supply cement to Soyo BD International. The China-based ready-mixed concrete supplier has recently started business in Bangladesh and is supplying different projects locally, according to the Daily Star newspaper.

France: Vicat says it offset rising energy costs by raising its prices in 2021. It reported growth in most places as markets recovered from the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It also noted a particular improvement in Egypt as government-mandated changes came into force in July 2021. The group’s consolidated sales rose by 11.3% year-on-year to Euro3.12bn in 2021 from Euro2.81bn in 2020. Cement and concrete volumes increased by 12.4% to 28.1Mt and 12.5% to 10.5Mm³ respectively. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 11.1% to Euro619m from Euro557m.

“Conditions in our markets remained dynamic, supported by favourable pricing trends in a context of sustained demand. This offsets the sharp rise in energy costs and wage increases,” said Vicat group chairman Guy Sidos.

France/Germany: Cemex has introduced electric vehicles into the concrete mixer truck fleets of its subsidiaries in France and Germany. The El Financiero newspaper has reported that, if successful, the test may lead to continued introductions and tests of new prototype zero-emission concrete mixer trucks in its operations.

Colombia: Cemex Colombia has recorded accumulated sales of 500,000m3 of its Vertua reduced-CO₂ concrete. It aims to achieve net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

President Alejandro Ramírez said “Our Vertua concrete sales volume is excellent news for the country. It demonstrates that a sustainable vision of construction is being consolidated in Colombia, conscious of its decisive contribution to global climate action.”

Saudi Arabia: Qanbar Ready Mix has run its first trial mix of concrete using Canada-based CarbonCure’s CO2 utilisation technology. The Eastern Province-based ready-mixed concrete producer conducted a full-scale plant trial in late December 2021 in Ras Al Khair Industrial City, according to Gulf Construction. Employees, customers from Saudi Aramco and engineers were present at the event. Concrete supplied from Qanbar Ready Mix’s batching plants will be used to supply projects at the King Salman International Complex for Maritime Industries and Services.

Mexico: Holcim Mexico has replaced 11% of its concrete truck fleet with 61 new natural gas and Euro V diesel-fuelled Sinotruk vehicles worth US$6.2m. The company says that some of the trucks run on 100% natural gas, reducing both their CO₂ and particulate emissions by 25%. Parent company Holcim hopes eventually to roll out Sinotruk vehicles throughout operations in its Latin American region. Each truck has an 8m3-greater capacity than Holcim Mexico’s previous models, and also generates less noise.

France: Private equity firm EIM Capital has acquired precast concrete products company Bonna Sabla from Consolis. The producer says that the new ownership will help it to capitalise on its commercial, economic and social situation through an ecological, energy and technological transition.

Chief executive officer Eric Lobbé said “We have the right teams and set of manufacturing facilities in France to pursue and develop our drainage precast solutions through well-known brands as Bonna Sabla, MPB and ABM. To be a pure player will allow us to capture significant organic growth opportunities, as well as being ready for future acquisitions. We will keep on pushing innovation to serve our customers.”
