Lucky Cement launches vocational scholarships
28 September 2020Pakistan: Lucky Cement has partnered with Hunar Foundation to launch scholarships for dedicated vocational training programmes for eligible young people in Lakki Marwat District, Khyber Pakthunkhwa Province. The Daily Messenger has reported that the company said that the scheme aims to “empower the youth of Pakistan through skill development.”
Gonzalo Mendoza wins Cemex’s Marcelo Zambrano Scholarship
07 September 2020Mexico: Cemex has announced the awarding by its Scholarship Council of the Marcelo Zambrano Scholarship to architect Gonzalo Mendoza. The group says that the funding will support Mendoza through his post-graduate study abroad at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, UK.
Cemex said Scholarship Council member Jimena Hogrebe said, "Choosing a profile like Gonzalo's, due to his experience and interests, is important today because we are facing global situations in which it seems essential to have critical professionals who dare to propose new possibilities for architecture."
US: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim has named the eight recipients of its 38th annual Gygi and von Wyss Foundation Scholarship. LafargeHolcim subsidiary US Cement CEO Jamie Gentoso said, “It’s essential to invest in the education of the next generation and, with the rising costs of higher education, scholarships are more important than ever to help reduce the impact and assist in these students’ success.” Under the scholarship scheme, children of LafargeHolcim employees in the US can receive US$6000 towards higher education for a year and again for three subsequent years subject to academic performance.
LafargeHolcim Paulding cement plant to build wind turbines
08 November 2018US: LafargeHolcim plans to build three wind turbines at its Paulding cement plant in Ohio to power the unit. Jamie M Gentoo, chief executive officer (CEO) of US cement operations, said that using distributed wind energy at the plant would be a first for the company in North America.
Constructing turbines will begin in December 2018 in partnership with One Energy. The three Paulding turbines are expected to generate more than 12MkWh/yr and should eliminate the equivalent of more than 9000t/yr of CO2.
As part of a community outreach project in conjunction with the turbine build, LafargeHolcim will create three US$5000 Megawatt Scholarships (one per turbine for a total of US$15,000/yr) to be awarded each year the turbines are in operation. The Megawatt Scholarships will be awarded annually to local high school graduates pursuing a two-year or four- year STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degree. Additionally, One Energy will pay US$27,000/yr annually in local property taxes.
