Holcim Argentina opens Holcim Technical Academy at Campana plant
18 October 2019Argentina: Holcim Argentina opened a technical training centre on 17 October 2019 at its 1.2Mt/yr Campana grinding plant. The Holcim Technical Academy will provide specialist training to managers and supervisors from Holcim’s Campana, Córdoba, Jujuy and Mendoza plants, with courses on quality, processes, maintenance and quarries.
Loma Negra to hire 120 for new line at L’Amali plant
17 October 2019Argentina: Loma’s new line at its L’Amali plant in Olavarría Province, involving a kiln, two vertical mills and a bagging and palletising unit, will create 120 jobs, 80 of which will go to plant staff. The company had previously estimated that 220 people would work on the line. In a statement, it emphasised the importance of maximising gender parity in its recruitment process.
Loma Negra estimated that the upgrade will enlarge the plant’s capacity by 40% to 2.4Mt/yr from 1.7Mt/yr. The declaration follows the announced relocation of 45 staff members with the closure of the 1.5Mt/yr integrated Olavarría cement plant, also in Olavarría province.
Loma Negra to close Olavarría cement plant
10 October 2019Argentina: Loma Negra plans to close its Olavarría integrated cement plant. The unit has 45 employees who will be relocated elsewhere in the business, according to the Buenos Aires Económico newspaper. In recent years the plant has been operating solely as a grinding and bagging unit. The cost of upgrading the plant and the relative distance of its raw materials were factors in the decision to close it. The Olavarría cement plant was the first to be built in the country.
In September 2019 the subsidiary of Brazil’s interCement said it was converting its San Juan integrated cement plant to grinding and bagging only. Earlier in the year it came close to closing its Barker plant as it was unable to reach an agreement with the local union over staff redundancies. Alongside this it is building a new production line at its L'Amalí cement plant.
Argentine cement consumption falls by 6% to 8.5Mt so far in 2019
10 October 2019Argentina: Data from the Association of Portland Cement Manufacturers (AFCP) shows that cement consumption fell by 6% year-on-year to 8.5Mt in the first nine months of 2019 from 9Mt in the same period in 2018. Local despatches dropped by 5% to 8.5Mt to 8.9Mt, although exports rose slightly.
Argentine cement sales rise
09 September 2019Argentina: Argentina’s Association of Portland Cement Manufacturers (AFCP) has reported on a 5.0% month-on-month growth in cement volumes sold to 1.05Mt in August 2019 from 1.00Mt in July of the same year. Domestic production continues to meet the entirety of demand, which grew by 5.1% year-on-year to 1.00Mt in July 2019 from 0.95Mt in July 2018.
Loma Negra converts San Juan plant to grinding
04 September 2019Argentina: Loma Negra has converted its 0.2Mt/yr San Juan integrated cement plant to grinding and bagging only. 14 people have resultantly lost their jobs, five of whom have accepted relocation to the company’s Catamarca plant. Catamarca is the largest of Loma Negra’s seven production facilities in Argentina, with a cement production capacity of 1.8Mt/yr.
Loma Negra ‘solid’ in second quarter
09 August 2019Argentina: Loma Negra, Argentina’s leading cement producer, saw its net revenue decline by 2% to US$165m in the second quarter of 2019, with its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rising by 7.1% to US$44m. This was driven by the domestic cement, lime and masonry sector.
Sergio Faifman, CEO of Loma Negra, said, “We are pleased to announce another set of solid results, our business continues to deliver adjusted EBITDA margin expansion based on our constant focus in profitability and cost enhancement initiatives. In this sense, during this quarter we adjusted our production-footprint by reconverting the Barker facility to a grinding and distribution centre, this initiative will let us be a more efficient and agile company. Considering the Argentine context, our business continues to deliver both adjusted EBITDA margin expansion and Net income growth.”
Loma Negra reports fire at L'Amalí cement plant
05 August 2019Argentina: Loma Negra says that a minor fire broke out at an auxiliary building for the second production line at the L'Amalí integrated cement plant on 1 August 2019. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. The subsidiary of Brazil’s InterCement said that the causes of the accident are yet to be determined but that no significant impacts are expected. The plant is currently being upgraded with a new production line that is scheduled for completion in early 2020.
Holcim Argentina to use 35% wind power in 2020
24 July 2019Argentina: Holcim Argentina has signed a deal with YPF Luz for the supply of wind power to its cement plants. The supply agreement is planned for the start of 2020. It is intended to provide 35% of the company’s emergy requriements by the end of the first half. YPF Luz will provide eletectricity from its Los Teros Wind Farm at Azul in Buenos Aires province. The contracted supply is for 142GWh from a 30MW installed base.
Argentina: Sergio Faifman, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Loma Negra has said that his company does not export cement because it is ‘not competitive’ with other countries. He cited logistical issues with transporting clinker and cement to ports, in an interview with the Ámbito Financiero newspaper. He also mentioned that the costs per tonne of cement in Brazil and Egypt were 30% and 50% respectively cheaper than in Argentina. In a ranging interview Faifman also discussed the cement producer’s labour problems at its Baker plant , its on-going upgrade at its L'Amali plant and negative effects from the local currency devaluation in 2018.
