World: Bulgaria-based consultancy firm OneStone Consulting has joined the World Cement Association (WCA) as an associate member. OneStone Consulting provides comprehensive market reporting, strategic advisory and sustainability consulting services for the cement and building material industries.

Bulgaria: The European Union (EU) Innovation Fund has awarded a Euro190m grant to Devnya Cement and oil and gas producer Petroceltic for their 800,000t/yr ANRAV carbon capture, transportation and storage project. Devnya Cement's parent company Heidelberg Materials says that the partners expect to commission the full-chain project in 2028.
Heidelberg Materials Northern and Eastern Europe-Central Asia board member Ernest Jelito said "Devnya Cement's Devnya plant will be the first carbon-neutral cement plant in the country and the region. ANRAV will also enable other industrial players to join the carbon chain in the future and share storage capacity. In this way, we want to not only decarbonise our company in Bulgaria, but also provide opportunities for the whole region."
Building CO2 infrastructure in Europe
20 July 2022It’s been a good week for carbon capture projects in Europe with the announcement of who the European Union (EU) has selected for a grant from its Innovation Fund. 17 large-scale projects have been pre-selected for the Euro1.8bn being doled out in the second round of awards. On the cement and lime sector side there are four projects. These include projects at Holcim’s Lägerdorf cement plant in Germany, HeidelbergCement’s Devnya Cement plant in Bulgaria, Holcim’s Kujawy plant in Poland and Lhoist’s Chaux et Dolomites du Boulonnais lime plant in France. Large-scale in this instance means projects with capital costs over Euro7.5m. To give readers some sense of the scale of the projects that the EU has agreed to pay for, if the funding was shared out equally between the current bunch, it would be a little over Euro100m per project. This is serious money.
Devnya Cement’s ANRAV carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project in Bulgaria has received little public attention so far so we’ll look a little more closely at this one first. No obvious information is available on what capture technology might be in consideration at the plant. HeidelbergCement’s leading experience in carbon capture technology at cement plants gives it a variety of methods it could use from a solvent scrubbing route to something less common. What the company has said is that, subject to regulatory approval and permitting, the project could start to capture 0.8Mt/yr of CO2 from 2028.
What has also been revealed is that the project is linking up via pipelines to a depleted part of the Galata gas field site in the Black Sea. Oil and gas company Petroceltic Bulgaria is a partner and the aim of the project is to start a CCUS cluster in Eastern Europe. with the potential for other capture sites in Romania and Egypt to join in. This is noteworthy because much of the focus for the burgeoning cement sector CCUS in Europe so far has been on usage on local industrial clusters or storage in the North Sea.
The other new one is the Go4ECOPlanet project at Holcim’s Kujawy plant in Poland. Lafarge Cement is working with Air Liquide on the project. The latter will be providing its Cryocap FG adsorption and cryogenics technology for direct capture of flue gas at the plant. The transportation of the CO2 is also interesting here as it will be by train not pipeline. Liquid CO2 will be despatched to a terminal in Gdańsk, then transferred to ships before being pumped down into a storage field under the North Sea.
Turning to the other two grant recipients, the Carbon2Business project plans to capture over 1Mt/yr of CO2 using a second generation oxyfuel process at Holcim Deutschland’s Lägerdorf cement plant. This project is part of a larger regional hydrogen usage cluster so the captured CO2 will be used to manufacture methanol in combination with the hydrogen. Finally, Lhoist’s project at a lime plant in France is another team-up with Air Liquide, again using the latter’s Cryocap technology. The capture CO2 will be transported by shared pipeline to a hub near Dunkirk and then stored beneath the North Sea as part of the D'Artagnan initiative. Around 0.61Mt/yr of CO2 is expected to be sequestered.
The key point to consider from all of the above is that all of these projects are clear about what is happening to the CO2 after capture. The days of ‘carbon capture and something’ have thankfully been left behind. CO2 transportation infrastructure is either being used or built and these cement plants will be feeding into it. This will inevitably lead to questions about whether all these new CO2 networks can support themselves with or without EU funding but that is an argument for another day.
Finally, in other news, four residents from the Indonesian island of Pulau Pari started legal proceedings against Holcim last week for alleged damages caused by climate change. Industrial CO2 emissions are unquestionably a cause of this along with other sources but what a court might think about this remains to be seen. Yet, it is intriguing that the plantiffs have decided to go after the 47th largest corporate emitter rather than, say, one of the top 10. Regardless of how far the islanders get this is likely not to be last such similar attempt. If the case does make it to court though it seems likely that Holcim will mention its work on CCUS such as the two projects above. Only another 200-odd cement plants in Europe to go.
Bulgaria/Poland: The EU Innovation Fund has awarded funding to Devnya Cement’s ANRAV carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project in Bulgaria and Lafarge Polska’s Go4ECOPlanet CCUS project in Poland.
ANRAV is a full-chain CCUS project connecting Devnya Cement’s Devnya cement plant in Varna Province over 30km to the Black Sea for storage. Go4ECOPlanet applies a similar model to the capture and storage of CO2 from Lafarge Polska’s Kujawy cement plant offshore in the North Sea. The Kujawy cement plant is situated 200km inland in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The plan is part of Lafarge Polska’s strategy to realise carbon neutrality at the Kujawy cement plant by 2027.
Regarding the ANRAV project, Mihail Polendakov, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania managing director at Devnya Cement’s parent company HeidelbergCement said “Our vision in the ANRAV consortium is to realise an economically viable CCUS cluster for Bulgaria and the neighbouring regions.” He continued “Subject to regulatory and permissions aspects, it could start operation as early as 2028, with a capture capacity of 800,000t/yr of CO2.
Titan Cement increases sales and profit as earnings drop in first nine months of 2021
11 November 2021Greece: Titan Cement has recorded sales of Euro1.26bn in the first nine months of 2021, up by 5% year-on-year from Euro1.2bn in the first nine months of 2020. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell by 4.3% to Euro220m from Euro229m, while its net profit rose by 41% to Euro81.9m from Euro58m.
During the third quarter of 2021, Titan Cement’s US low-carbon cement sales reached 50% of its total US cement sales. It also continued with hydrogen enrichment pilot studies in its cement kilns in Bulgaria and Greece.
Devnya Cement loses quartz sand concession
20 December 2019Bulgaria: The Bulgarian government has terminated Devnya Cement’s concessionary contract for the extraction of quartz sand for cement production from the Selski Nivi deposit. SeeNews has reported that the company requested the contract’s termination due to alterations to its production strategy in response to market conditions.
In 2018, Devnya Cement generated a revenue of Euro70.3m, which translated into Euro8.65m profit.
OneStone Consulting moves to Bulgaria
02 May 2019Bulgaria: OneStone Consulting has moved its headquarters to Varna. The business-to-business consultancy company was previously based in Barcelona in Spain.
Bulgaria/Panama: Germany’s Venti Oelde has increased its sales presence in Europe and Central America. Its has appointed a new sales representative in Bulgaria, as well as one in Panama to cover countries including Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The company manufactures industrial products including fans and filters.
The European Union’s (EU) verified CO2 emissions figures were released earlier this week on 1 April 2019. The good news is that no cement plant is within the top 100 largest emitters. All the top spots are held by power plants, iron and steel producers and the odd airline. Indeed, out of all of the verified emissions, cement clinker or lime production only represents 7% of the total emissions. Of course this is too much if the region wants to meet its climate change commitments but it is worth remembering that other industries have a long way to go as well and they don’t necessarily face the intrinsic process challenges that clinker production has. If the general public or governments are serious about cutting CO2 emissions then they might consider, for example, taking fewer flights with airlines before picking on the cement industry.
The EU emitted 117Mt of CO2 from its clinker and lime producers in 2018, a 2.7% year-on-year decrease compared to 120Mt in 2017. This compares to 158Mt in 2008, giving a 26% drop in emissions over the decade to 2018. However, there are two warnings attached to this data. First, there are plants on this list that have closed between 2008 and 2018. Second, there are plants that provided no data in 2018, for example, all the plants in Bulgaria. Climate change think tank Sandbag helpfully pointed out in its analysis of the EU emissions data that industrial emissions have barely decreased since 2012. The implication here being that the drop from 2008 to 2012 was mainly due to the economic recession. Sandbag also made the assertion that 96% of the cement industry’s emissions were covered by free allocations in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) thereby de-incentivising sector willingness to decarbonise.
By country the emissions in 2018 from cement and lime roughly correspond with production capacity, although this comes with the caveat that emissions link to actual production not potential capacity. So, Germany leads followed by Spain, Italy, Poland and France. Of these Poland is a slight outlier, as will be seen below.

Poland leads the count in the top 10 EU CO2 emitting cement plants in 2018 with five plants. Greece follows with two plants. This list is deceptive as all of these plants are large ones with production capacities of 2Mt/yr and above. As it contains many of the largest plants in the EU no wonder the emissions are the highest. It is also worth considering that there are far larger plants outside of the EU.
In summary, as most readers will already know, the cement industry is a significant minority CO2 emitter in the EU. Countries with larger cement sectors emit more CO2 as do larger plants. So far, so obvious. Emissions are down since 2008 but this mostly seems to have stalled since 2012, bar a blip in 2017. The change though has been the rising carbon price in the EU ETS in 2018. Coincidentally the carbon price has been fairly low and stable since 2012. If the mechanism is working properly then changes should start to appear in 2019. Already in 2018 a few European cement producers announced plant closures and blamed the carbon price. Watch this space.
US/Europe: US refractory manufacturer Plibrico has entered into a distribution partnership with the Pli Group Europe, a refractory distributor contractor based in Vienna, Austria. Under the new alliance, Pli Group Europe will provide full-service distribution of Plibrico’s Plico brand refractories in Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria, with immediate effect.
“Adding Pli Group Europe to our ranks of Pli Partners allows Plibrico to reinforce its expertise, enhance its service offering and strengthen the value chain offered to customers throughout Europe,” said Brad Taylor, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Plibrico.
