GCC orders pyroprocessing equipment from ThyssenKrupp Polysius for Odessa cement plant expansion

US: GCC has ordered pyroprocessing equipment from ThyssenKrupp Polysius for the expansion of its Odessa cement plant in Texas. The upgrade will more than double the plant’s capacity to 1.9Mt/yr, and reduce its CO2 emissions by 13%. Contractor H&M Construction says that the project will be the third on which it has collaborated on design and construction.

H&M Vice President Casey Rushing said “H&M is proud to have the opportunity to serve GCC as its design-builder on this great project. H&M has a very strong active presence in Texas and a very strong veteran self-perform team that has recently completed with Polysius a near identical pyroprocessing expansion in the Southeast US. We intend to improve on our successes from our previous pyroprocessing lines by executing this project for GCC with superior safety, quality and customer satisfaction.”

Cementos Argos to expand facilities in the US and Colombia

US/Colombia: Colombia-based Cementos Argos is carrying out expansions to two cement plants in South Carolina and West Virginia. While not specifically named, these would appear to be the 1.1Mt/yr Harleyville and 1.8Mt/yr Martinsburg cement plants. The producer says that the expansions will increase its cement capacity in the eastern US by 450,000t/yr.

Additionally, Cementos Argos plans to expand the capacity of its Cartagena cement terminal in Colombia by 35% to 4Mt/yr. The producer says that this will serve as a platform for subsequent growth. It is targeting the US market, where an expansion is also underway at its import facility in Houston, Texas. The Cartagena terminal achieved its current capacity following a recent US$42m expansion.

Turkmencement completes Lebap cement plant upgrade

Turkmenistan: State-owned Turkmencement has successfully carried out an upgrade to its 1Mt/yr Lebap cement plant at Koytendag. The upgrade involves the installation of a new 3000t/day kiln line, supplied by Germany-based thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions. The producer first announced the project in mid-2020, and ordered the new line in mid-2021.

In 2022, the Lebap cement plant produced 1.1Mt of cement, up by 11% year-on-year from 991,000t in 2021.

Taiheiyo Cement Philippines to more than double capacity of San Fernando cement plant

Philippines: Taiheiyo Cement Philippines plans to install a second production line at its 0.8Mt/yr San Fernando cement plant in Cebu. The Philippines Department of Trade and industry says that the new line will more than double the plant’s capacity to 3Mt/yr. It will also entail an upgrade to reduce its total energy-related CO2 emissions by 10%. The Philippine Daily Enquirer newspaper has reported that the producer will additionally build a 700,000t/yr terminal at Calaca in Batangas. The facility will cost US$68.4m. Altogether, the company expects its growth plans to generate 2000 new jobs in the Philippines. The Philippines government has committed 6% of gross domestic product (GDP) to infrastructure investments annually.

Taiheiyo Cement Philippines previously indicated in August 2022 that the San Fernando cement plant might eventually expand to a capacity of 5Mt/yr. At that time, it expected to commission the new Line 2 in May 2024.

Special trade representative to the Philippine Trade and Investment Centre in Tokyo, Dita Angara-Mathay, said "The company's latest announcement materialises its plans to expand to Luzon from its long-time base in the Visayan region."

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) orders Gebr. Pfeiffer vertical roller mills for Ariyalur and Kadapa grinding plants

India: Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer says that it has received orders for two MVR 3750 C-4 vertical roller mills from Dalmia Cement (Bharat). The producer plans to install one mill at its Ariyalur grinding plant in Tamil Nadu and the other at its Kadapa grinding plant in Andhra Pradesh. Gebr. Pfeiffer says that the mills will be employed in grinding clinker and pond ash. Each will produce 160t/hr of cement or fly ash cement. The supplier said that the mills' vertical design will help them to dry pond ash, as well as grinding and classifying it.

Cooperativa La Cruz Azul inaugurates upgraded Oaxaca cement plant following US$301m investments

Mexico: Cooperativa La Cruz Azul has inaugurated the new Kiln 5 at its Oaxaca cement plant in Lagunas. Local press has reported that the new kiln will increase the plant's clinker capacity by 3700t/day. Additionally, the producer has inaugurated a new weighbridge at the plant. The equipment is capable of weighing trucks of up to 100t in mass. Cooperativa La Cruz Azul's investments in the latest upgrades to the Lagunas cement plant totalled US$301m.

Cooperativa La Cruz Azul said "With these projects, multiple benefits are generated for the community, and the cooperative reaffirms its commitment to the progress and development of the region."

Ambuja Cements to acquire Sanghi Industries stake and expand Sanghipuram plant

India: Ambuja Cements has concluded a deal to acquire a 57% stake in Sanghi Industries for US$202m. Reuters has reported that the company has offered to subsequently increase its stake in Sanghi Industries to as much as 83% for up to US$295m in total. It will fund the acquisition of any stake through internal accruals. Sanghi Industries operates the 6.1Mt/yr Sanghipuram cement plant, which is equipped with a 130MW captive power plant and a 13MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant. The cement plant, in Gujarat, also has a single-jetty port on the Arabian Sea coast. Ambuja Cements' parent company Adani Group plans to more than double the Sanghipuram cement plant's capacity to 15Mt/yr.

Adani Group chair Gautam Adani said “By joining hands with Sanghi Industries, Ambuja is poised to expand its market presence, strengthen its product portfolio and reinforce its position as a leader in the construction materials sector. With this acquisition, Adani Group is well on course to achieve its target of 140Mt/yr of cement manufacturing capacity by 2028 ahead of time.”

ThyssenKrupp Polysius delivers Polysius booster mill for Mountain Cement's Laramie grinding plant

US: ThyssenKrupp Polysius, a subsidiary of Germany-based thyssenkrupp, has delivered a Polysius booster mill to Mountain Cement's Laramie grinding plant in Wyoming. The Eagle Materials subsidiary will take delivery of further ancillary equipment, including material handling, process gas management and machine protection systems, throughout mid-late 2023. The supplier said that the mill will help to increase the Laramie plant's flexibility. It will also provide site services and technical support for optimisation and maintenance for two years after commissioning, also slated for 2023.

ThyssenKrupp Polysius' project manager Matthew Burchfield said "This is a very important and interesting project for ThyssenKrupp Polysius. This is the first booster mill system sold in the US and one of the first booster mills worldwide. We are tasked with a very tight engineering and supply schedule. ThyssenKrupp Polysius is working closely with Mountain Cement and its engineering teams."

UltraTech Cement completes Sonar Bangla II cement plant expansion

India: UltraTech Cement has announced the inauguration of its expanded Sonar Bangla II cement plant. Reuters has reported that the expansion has more than doubled the plant's capacity to 1.3Mt/yr. It increases UltraTech Cement's total installed capacity by 0.5% to 131Mt/yr.

Kant Cement transitions Kant cement plant's Grinding Unit 8 to closed cycle grinding

Kyrgyzstan: Kant Cement has successfully transitioned Grinding Unit 8 of its Kant cement plant to closed cycle grinding operations. Business World News has reported that China-based CNBM Beijing Triumph carried out the work. The transition has increased the unit's production capacity by 30 - 40%.

Kant Cement's general director Pavel Dekhtyarev said "The mill previously produced 40t/hr of CEM II cement and 30t/hr of CEM I cement. Now it produces 58t/hr and 50t/hr, respectively. With this productivity, it was possible to reduce the specific energy consumption by 30% and reduce dust emissions. In addition, closed circuit grinding allows us to produce high grades of cement that could not be obtained with open circuit grinding systems."
