Eqiom orders equipment from Fives FCB to upgrade Héming cement grinding plant

04 September 2024

France: Eqiom has awarded Fives FCB a contract to upgrade its cement grinding plant at Héming. The project involves integrating an FCB TSV 4000 TSF Classifier and an FCB TGT Filter with the existing milling circuit at the unit operating by the subsidiary of Ireland-based CRH. The upgrade is intended to reduce the plant’s clinker factor, improve the quality of the cements produced, offer the option of manufacturing cements with higher fineness and reduce energy consumption. The new equipment is expected to be tied-in during the plant’s annual mill shutdown in 2025, with commissioning to follow.

Deadly disaster at Cementos Cienfuegos’ Carlos Marx cement plant

30 August 2024

Cuba: A ‘materials spill’ at Cementos Cienfuegos’ Carlos Marx cement plant in Guabairo on 27 August 2024 resulted in the death of one worker and injuries to five others. General manager Ernesto Gálvez said that a filter in the plant’s Kiln 3 collapsed, leading to the spillage of hot material from a hopper. Granma News has reported that Raymundo Narciso Sarría, an employee of contractor Empresa de Construcciones Ingenieras No. 6, died, while one other worker is in a critical condition, two in a serious or very serious condition and two others in a less serious condition.

Lafarge Africa upgrade dust emissions control at Ewekoro cement plant

Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has installed a new bag filter at its 3.9Mt/yr Ewekoro cement plant in Ogun State. The filter cost US$8.51m. Lafarge Africa says that the equipment has successfully reduced the plant’s dust emissions to below 50mg/Nm3. The company said that it has made ‘significant adjustments’ to its production activities, besides introducing air quality measurement systems across a 10km radius of the plant.

Lafarge Africa’s head of health, safety and environment Rachael Ezembakwe said “Care for the environment and for our host communities is built into all aspects of our operations within the country. Our social impact is focused on the areas of the most need: education, empowerment, health and safety, and shelter/infrastructure.”

CTP Team installing waste heat recovery system at Medcem Çimento

24 May 2023

Türkiye: Italy-based CTP Team says it is currently installing a new waste heat recovery (WHR) system at Medcem Çimento’s Mersin plant. Its contribution to the construction of a new production line at the site includes installing an organic rankine cycle-based (ORC) 10.5Mwe WHR system and three new process fabric filters for the kiln and raw mill, coal mill and cement mills. The new line is expected to be commissioned in 2024.

Elex starts up electrostatic precipitator at National Cement’s Ragland plant in Alabama

12 April 2022

US: Switzerland-based Elex has completed a cold start-up of an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) it has supplied to National Cement’s Ragland plant in Alabama. The ESP will be used for primary dedusting and it has a separation area of approximately 7000m2. The cement plant, owned by France-based Vicat, is currently building a new 5000t/day production line that is due to be commissioned in mid-2022.

Redecam upgrades filter at Lafarge Egypt’s Ain Al-Sokhna cement plant

Egypt: Redecam says it has successfully started up a project one line two at Lafarge Egypt’s Ain Al-Sokhna cement plant. The upgrade consisted of: converting the main kiln’s electrostatic precipitator (ESP) into a bag filter; enhanced the cooling system for the clinker cooler, including a partial ESP retrofit; and revamping the bypass the gas conditioning tower and dust transport system. The Italy-based engineering company previously carried out a similar project on line three at the plant in 2020.

Krasnoyarsk Cement completes environmental upgrade

10 December 2020

Russia: Sibirskiy Cement subsidiary Krasnoyarsk Cement says that it has installed a new electrostatic precipitator on Kiln 5 at its Krasnoyarsk cement plant as part of an environmental upgrade project. It spent US$3m on the equipment from Switzerland. It says that it has made ‘a significant contribution’ to the company’s goals under the Clean Air national project. The company has also installed an automatic emission control system at the plant.

The cement producer now plans to upgrade the plant’s primary limestone crushing equipment for US$203,000 and install a new automated measuring system for US$379,000. It has estimated that its full-year cement output in 2020 will increase by 2% year-on-year to 621,000t from 609,000t in 2019.

Cement producers agree on NOx emissions reduction in South Korea

11 June 2020

South Korea: All nine domestic cement producers and the Ministry of Environment have agreed on measures to reduce NOx emissions. Asia Cement, Halla Cement, Hanil Cement Manufacturing, Hyundai Cement, Korea Cement, Sampyo Cement, Ssangyong Cement Industrial, SungShin Cement and Union Corporation have agreed to invest in upgrades to filters or new high-efficiency filters and process improvements, according to the Korea Times newspaper. There was also an agreement to set NOx emissions reduction targets for the allocation of funding. The Korea Environmental Industry Technology Institute is investing US$2.93m in research towards developing methods of selective catalytic NOx emissions reduction and selective non-catalytic NOx emissions reduction.

The government aims to reduce national NOx emissions by 20% to 155,000t/yr from 195,000t/yr through subsidies to emissions reduction technologies development and uptake. The cement sector presently emits 62,500t, 32% of the domestic total.

Republic Cement to upgrade plants with bag filters in 2019

18 March 2019

Philippines: Republic Cement plans to install bag filters on its clinker conveyors, cement mills and packaging lines at its Batangas and Teresa plants in 2019 to replace electrostatic precipitators. It follows the installation of kiln bag filters, according to the Business Mirror newspaper. Following the upgrade it reduced its dust emissions by 75% to 20mg/Nm3, below the national limit of 150mg/Nm3. The cement producer is also considering building concrete roads at its unit to further reduce dust emissions.

Aïn Touta Cement buys filter for plant

Algeria: The Aïn Touta Cement (SCIMAT) plant near Batna has spent US$10m on a new filter. The investment is part of a group of improvements intended to increase production at the unit in 2019, according to Le Courrier d'Algérie newspaper. The company is also implementing a new integrated administration system.
