India: Adani Group and JSW Group have submitted their non-binding bids to Holcim for acquisition of its subsidiary Ambuja Cements. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that Aditya Birla subsidiary UltraTech is also preparing a bid. A deal with UltraTech Cement would delay closure due to the Competition Commission of India approval process it entails. Holcim previously indicated that it would like to conclude the deal early.

Adani Group would finance any acquisition with a combination of its own cash and that from Gulf-based sovereign funds, while JSW Group would engage private equity.

India: JK Lakshmi Cement has partnered with the Society for Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA) to integrate calcined clay technology into its operations in order to commence production of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3). United News of India has reported that the producer says that this type of composite cement reduces the product's clinker factor by 50% and its carbon footprint by 40%.

JK Lakshmi Cement said "This partnership will be a game-changer for the cement industry, giving impetus to its efforts in mitigating emissions, combating climate change and bringing a holistic change in the surrounding communities to create sustainable livelihoods in large numbers."

India: Tamilnadu Cements plans to set up a new grinding plant in Alangulam, Tamil Nadu. The Hindu newspaper has reported that the unit will serve the nearby Arasu cement plant and double its cement capacity to 0.56Mt/yr from 0.28Mt/yr. It will cost US$5.22m and produce the company's Valimai cement.

Tamilnadu Cements has sold 59,000t of Valimai cement to date.

India: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has started insolvency proceedings against Andhra Cement, a subsidiary of Jaypee Group. The decision by the NCLT follows a petition filed by Pridhvi Asset Reconstruction and Securitisation claiming a default relating to bank loans taken out between 2012 and 2016, according to the Press Trust of India. Separately, Andhra Cement has asked its creditors to submit their claims by 10 May 2022 before the Interim Resolution Professional (IRP). Local media has also reported that the cement producer had been unable to operate its cement plant at above 60% capacity utilisation due to a shortage of working capital.

India: ACC has launched Holcim’s Houses of Tomorrow sustainable homebuilding initiative with the construction of a low CO₂ home in Puducherry called Gratitude Villa. Projects Today News has reported that architect Trupti Doshi selected building materials to reduce CO₂ emissions by 40% by comparison to conventional materials such as ordinary Portland cement (OPC). She opted for ACC’s Suraksha brand cement, fly ash bricks and ECOPact green concrete.

India: ACC has appointed Rashmi Khandelwal as its company secretary. She succeeds Rajiv Choubey who will remain with ACC as chief legal officer.

Khandelwal is a qualified company secretary with 13 years of professional experience. Previous roles include working for YES Bank and the legal company Mis Yaish Associates. She has also co-written two books about the government’s Companies Act 2013.

India: Adani Group has reportedly entered an advanced stage of discussions with Holcim over its possible acquisition of the latter's Indian cement operations. The Times of India newspaper has reported that Holcim subsidiaries Ambuja Cements and ACC together have a cement production capacity of 64Mt/yr. The value of their assets has a market cap of US$15.7bn.

India: Police in Mumbai, Maharashtra, have opened a case against a Gujarat-based cement producer on charges of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy. The Times of India newspaper has reported that the accused company borrowed US$27m in 2017 and early 2018, purportedly for the purchase of four clinker carrier ships and the construction of jetties at two sites in Gujarat. However, the producer had mortgaged all four ships, pledging over 20% of its shares. From the funds, it reportedly paid itself for the construction of the jetties, and used US$17.35 to repay outstanding bank loans.

India: The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) has named Ambuja Cements’ Rabriyawas cement plant as winner of its National Safety Award (Mines). Its winning initiatives include its Behaviour Based Safety training programme and Reward & Recognition employee engagement programme. Ambuja Cements said that the award confirms that Ambuja's Zero Harm policy has borne fruit.

India: An explosion at a cement plant in Gujarat’s Rajkot district has killed three workers. The Times of India newspaper has reported that police have detained two engineers on suspicion of criminal negligence.
