Doppelmayr Transport Technology supplies RopeCon ropeway conveyor for Aggregate Industries' Bardon Hill quarry restoration
10 August 2022UK: Doppelmayr Transport Technology says that a 1000t/hr RopeCon ropeway conveying system is in operation at Aggregate Industries' Bardon Hill quarry in Leicestershire. Doppelmayr Transport Technology supplied the equipment to help move overburden from a new quarry extension for emplacement in an area where mining has finished. The total 600m-long system consists of one 500m section and one 100m section.
Kant Cement begins development of new limestone mine
18 July 2022Kyrgyzstan: Kant Cement has begun excavating the Severnaya Gryada limestone deposit near to its Kant cement plant. The producer says that the limestone has a higher purity than that from its existing Agalatas mine. It therefore expects the Kant plant to reduce its raw materials consumption and eliminate a part of its dust emissions. Kant Cement currently replaces a part of the limestone in the plant’s cement production with 65,000t/yr of fly ash.
India: The Indian Ministry of Mines and Indian Bureau of Mines have awarded UltraTech Cement Five Star ratings for 10 limestone mines across India. Assessment took place within the Indian mining Sustainable Development Framework, which quantifies sustainability, efficiency, land use and resettlement, besides other social impacts.
Holcim acquires Teko Mining Serbia
12 July 2022Serbia: Holcim has acquired aggregates producer Teko Mining Serbia. Teko Mining Serbia’s aggregates sales were 2.4Mt in 2021. It employs 150 people across its quarries in Batocina, Ceramide, Ladne Vode and Ljubovija.
Holcim’s Europe, Middle East and Africa regional head Miljan Gutovic said “Teko complements our existing cement and concrete operations perfectly, allowing us to add aggregates and asphalt as part of our integrated offer in this highly dynamic market. I look forward to welcoming the employees of Teko Mining, whose expertise will be invaluable in accelerating our growth, especially in the highly dynamic Serbian market, and will enable us to develop circular solutions to recycle construction and demolition waste in the future.”
Canada: Holcim has announced its acquisition of Mathers Group’s quarry and asphalt assets in Quebec. The group says that the acquisition will accelerate its development of local circular construction practices by expanding its recycled concrete offering.
Global Cement Magazine all set for Hillhead 2022
20 June 2022UK: Global Cement Magazine is ready for the Hillhead 2022 quarrying, construction and recycling show that takes place on 21 – 23 June 2022 taking place in Derbyshire. You can find Global Cement Magazine at stand PB14 in the Main Pavilion. The event was originally planned to take place in June 2021 but was postponed for one year following the UK coronavirus-related lockdowns. Held in a limestone quarry, the organisers say that it is the largest exhibition of its kind anywhere in the world.

Cembureau publishes 2030 Biodiversity Roadmap
30 May 2022Europe: The European cement industry association Cembureau has published its 2030 Biodiversity Roadmap. The roadmap sets out the association’s strategy for becoming nature positive by 2030. This consists of four focus areas, namely participation in the European Union (EU) Pollinators Initiative, control of invasive species, support for protected species and ecosystem rehabilitation efforts.
Chief executive officer Koen Coppenholle said “The European cement industry is committed to achieving the goals set in the EU Green Deal. In addition to climate change, one of the key priorities of our industry is to protect and preserve the rich ecosystems thriving in and around our quarries and to make a strong contribution to biodiversity across the EU.”
Mannok secures injunction against Seán Quinn
26 May 2022Ireland/UK: An Irish high court has granted Mannok an injunction to prevent former Quinn Industrial Holdings CEO Seán Quinn from trespassing on the site of its Derrylin cement plant and quarry in Cavan and County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, UK. The Irish Examiner newspaper has reported that the company cited safety concerns over Quinn's presence near industrial equipment and a sheer quarry drop. His media statement in 2021 that he would 'do anything' to remove its directors compounded Mannok's 'sense of unease.'
US: Cemex USA has applied for a permit to continue mining at Dowe Flats to support operations at its integrated Lyons cement plant in Colorado. It has asked the Boulder County Community Planning and Permitting department to allow it continue mining for 15 years until 2037, according to the Daily Camera newspaper. It then says it will close the cement plant. Its existing mining permit will end later in 2022.
India: The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) has named Ambuja Cements’ Rabriyawas cement plant as winner of its National Safety Award (Mines). Its winning initiatives include its Behaviour Based Safety training programme and Reward & Recognition employee engagement programme. Ambuja Cements said that the award confirms that Ambuja's Zero Harm policy has borne fruit.
