Central America: Denmark’s FLSmidth has been awarded two contracts for cement plants worth over Euro250m. One deal is for a new plant and the other is for an expansion to an existing site. The expected start-up for each project is by mid-2021 and once operational, the cement plants will have a capacity of 2000t/day and 3500t/day respectively.

Both contracts include design and engineering, equipment supply, automation systems, training as well as advisory services for installation and commissioning. Each project is also dependent on FLSmidth receiving an agreed down payment before work can commence.

Paraguay: Industria Nacional del Cemento’s (INC) has officially inaugurated a second cement mill at its Villeta plant. The state-owned cement producer spent US$12m on the upgrade, according to the Agencia de Información Paraguaya. The new mill was built by China’s Sinoma. It has a cement production capacity of 80t/hr or be able to produce around 800,000 bags/month of cement. INC also plans to start operating a pozzolan drying unit at Villeta in September 2018.

UAE: Lafarge Emirates has ordered a Jetflex Plus burner for its Fujairah cement plant from FLSmidth. Thierry Terriere, the plant manager, and Simon Jensen, head of FLSmidth Middle-East, signed the contract.

“As the business has shifted towards using low-cost fuels with high-quality clinker, we have made an ambitious decision and chosen the best option on the market – this next generation burner from FLSmidth," Sohail Qaiser, Process Manager at Lafarge Emirates Cement. He added that the company expects a ‘significant’ change in its fuel mix cost as well as a more sustainable kiln operation.

FLSmidth says that the Jetflex Plus burner is the first to be installed in the LafargeHolcim Group and that the company was selected for procurement and supervision of the installation of it. The burner product has rotatable jet air nozzles allowing for optimal adjustment of the flame as well as the low NOx emissions for various fuel types and operating conditions.

The relationship between the companies dates back to 2007 when FLSmidth built the 7500t/day Fujairah plant for Orascom.

Italy: Exergy has signed a contract with Cementi Rossi for a 3.5MW organic rankine cycle (ORC) waste heat recovery (WHR) system to be installed at the Pederobba plant near Treviso. The scope of the contract includes engineering, design, site erection, commissioning and start up of the power plant and a long term after sales service.

Exergy designed a customized and compact ORC solution to convert approximately 16MWt available from exhaust heat in the clinker cooler into 3.5MW of electricity utilising an air cooled condensing system, a radial outflow turbine as expander and choosing a non-flammable fluid to grant maximum safety during plant operation. The electricity produced by the ORC module will feed approximately the 30% of the energy demand of the cement plant.

“Our ORC WHR systems, leveraging on the higher efficiency of the radial outflow turbine, can help to boost at maximum level the performance of cement plants. For Cementi Rossi in particular we worked to supply a tailor made solution, choosing a non-flammable fluid in the cycle and a very compact plant design with a high level of prefabricated components to reduce costs and time for erection,” said Claudio Spadacini, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Exergy.

Poland: Fives FCB has released more information about an upgrade to a limestone grinding workshop for Lhoist Bukowa. In late May 2018 it signed an acceptance certificate with the lime producer for a FCB TSV Classifier 1400 HF. The classifier was selected to close a circuit consisting in a ball mill in open circuit. This FCB TSV Classifier 1400 HF is the third one ordered to Fives by Lhoist Bukowa.

Russia: The management of Gornozavodskcement is looking for a co-investor to upgrade its cement plant to a dry production method. Previously the company had conducted negotiations with Ireland’s CRH over the upgrade but these have been abandoned, according to Construction and Real Estate Daily News. The cement producer operates a plant near Perm.

India: Orient Cement plans to upgrade its Devapur in Adilabad District, Telangana. It will invest US$290m towards more than doubling the unit’s cement production capacity to 7.5Mt/yr from 3Mt/yr, according to the Press Trust of India. The cement producer obtained first stage clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to expand the existing integrated cement plant. However, final clearance from the Ministry is still awaited.

India: UltraTech Cement plans to build five waste heat recovery (WHR) units with an investment of US$72.6m. The new WHR units will have a capacity of 63MW and they will take the company’s total WHR capacity to 121MW, according to the Hindu newspaper. It is anticipated that the cement producer will be able to meet half of its power requirements from its WHR plants. They are also intended to protect the company from changes in the price of coal.

Bolivia: Soboce (Sociedad Boliviana de Cemento) has inaugurated a new vertical grinding mill at its Viache integrated plant. Together with its other integrated plants at Oruro and Tarija and a grinding plant at Santa Cruz the company now has a cement production capacity of 2.9Mt/yr, according to the Diario Pagina Siete newspaper. The upgrade cost US$85m. Soboce ordered an OK 36-4 vertical roller mill from Denmark’s FLSmidth for the project. To coincide with the new mill the company will also launch ‘Viacha LP12 Insuperable,’ a new cement product.

India: Ramco Cement has ordered three vertical roller mills from Germany’s Loesche. It has ordered two LM 41.2+2 CS type mills with two grinding rollers and two support rollers with a power range of 3000kW and a capacity of 130t/hr for two of its cement plants to grind the Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC). The first mill will be installed at Kolaghat, West Bengal, where Ramco Cement is upgrading a grinding plant to 2Mt/yr from 0.95Mt/yr. The second mill will be used at a grinding plant in Gobburupalam, Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

A third mill has been ordered for a newly-built plant at Haridaspur in Odisha. Here, a LM 46.2+2 CS type mill with a capacity of 3750kW will be used to grind PPC with a throughput of 165t/hr. This order also includes mill fans, bag-type filters and further auxiliary equipment. It will all be delivered by the end of 2018.
