Ukraine: Companies belonging to the Ukrcement association increased cement production by 24% year-on-year to 3.8Mt between January and June 2024, according to a press release.
Clinker production also rose by 13% year-on-year to 3Mt.
The statement said "Despite the enormous challenges of the war, the enterprises of the Association of Cement Producers of Ukraine Ukrcement continue to adapt to new realities and produce strategically important products – cement.”
Tunisia: Les Ciments de Bizerte continues to face disruptions due to a financial crisis, limiting its operations to grinding imported clinker and managing petcoke shipments for third parties, African Manager News reports. Clinker production has been suspended throughout the second quarter of 2024, due to a lack of petcoke.
Cement production plummeted by 70% to 33,282t in the second quarter of 2024 from 109,855t during the same period in 2023. Lime production also declined by 37% due to reduced national demand. Local sales in the first half of 2024 decreased by 60% from US$16.3m in 2023 to US$6.6m in 2024, with exports completely halted during the first half of 2024. The company is in the process of paying off its debts.
Construction boom leads to cement shortage in Kyrgyzstan
07 August 2024Kyrgyzstan: Amidst a nationwide construction boom, Kyrgyzstan faces a cement shortage in its northern regions, Central Asia News reports. The current production in northern plants is insufficient, leading to imports from Kazakhstan which do not meet demand.
Nurdan Oruntaev, Head of State Construction Agency, said “I think the problem will be resolved with the launch of two new cement plants, which are under construction. Prices can then be regulated."
Iran's cement production and exports decline
06 August 2024Iran: Head of the Iran Cement Association Hamid Farmani reported a 10% decline in Iran's cement production to 76Mt in the year ending 19 March 2024, reports The Tehran Times. Association member Ali-Akbar Alvandian also noted that cement exports fell to 10.5Mt during the period of 21 March 2023 - 21 December 2023, from 13Mt in the previous corresponding period. Annual production is calculated at 90Mt, 60Mt of which is used domestically. 13 white cement projects in the country are currently semi-finished, and if completed will lead to a capacity increase of 8.8Mt/yr.
Farmani said “We predict that in the coming years, the per capita consumption of cement in Iran will approach advanced and developing countries, and the consumption will increase from about 800kg per person to 2000kg per person.”
Vietnam's cement production rises
30 July 2024Vietnam: Vietnam produced 104.1Mt of cement in the first seven months of 2024, marking a 1% increase year-on-year, as reported by the General Statistics Office (GSO). In July 2024, the country's cement output is estimated at 15.2Mt, a rise of 7% compared to July 2023.
Ghori Cement production set to rise in Baghlan
23 July 2024Afghanistan: The Ghori Cement plant in Baghlan province plans to increase its production from 0.18Mt in 2023 to 0.2Mt in 2024 due to a growing demand for cement. Technical deputy of the factory, Sarbaz Banuzai, also revealed plans for a new cement plant capable of producing 1.3Mt/yr, which would stand adjacent to the current facility.
Factory workers voiced support for the expansion as a means to combat unemployment and boost local production.
Cement production rises in Uzbekistan
22 July 2024Uzbekistan: Cement manufacturers in Uzbekistan produced 6.2Mt of cement from January to May 2024, reflecting 35% growth year-on-year, according to data from the local Statistics Agency. In May 2024, production was at 1.7Mt.
Philippines: Taiheiyo Cement Philippines has inaugurated a new US$220m production line at its plant in San Fernando, Cebu, which is expected to support national cement production and reduce reliance on imports. The plant now has a capacity of 3Mt/yr, or 6000t/day of clinker. The new production line replaced the old facility, which was demolished in 2021. The facility incorporates kiln renewal technology that reportedly cuts CO₂ emissions by at least 10% through reduced energy consumption and a lower clinker factor. San Fernando Mayor Mytha Ann Canoy said the new facility is expected to generate 2000 new jobs.
Kyrgyzstan: Cement production in Kyrgyzstan totalled 1.01Mt from January to May 2024, a decline of 5.7% year-on-year from 1.08Mt, according to data from the country’s National Statistics Committee. May 2024 saw production of 0.36Mt of cement, a rise of 10.5% year-on-year from May 2023.
Colombian cement sector faces challenges
18 July 2024Colombia: The cement sector in Colombia is experiencing difficulties due to a contraction in the construction sector. This is attributed to an economic slowdown that has impacted on housing and infrastructure projects. From January – April 2024, cement production declined by 4% year-on-year. The industry is also contending with high production costs, which have reduced profit margins. Delays in infrastructure projects, influenced by the transition in local governments, have further affected demand for cement.
